Job overview

Head Teacher, East Ayrshire

East Ayrshire (pop. 120,000) has strong, vibrant communities where residents enjoy a good quality of life and have access to opportunities, choices and high quality services.  Set in a desirable part of Scotland, East Ayrshire offers a contrast of beautiful countryside and scenic villages. With excellent train links and the M77 motorway extension, travel time between Glasgow and Kilmarnock is around 30 minutes, making many of our schools easily accessible using these routes.

With 9 secondary schools, 42 primary schools some of which have their own early childhood centre, 3 special schools and 14 separate early childhood centres, our staff are committed professionals who strive to meet the highest educational standards and are encouraged to use creativity in their daily practice.

We are an inclusive authority where everyone shares the aim of providing children and young people with the best start in life. The authority has invested in a modern school estate including shared campuses, integration of children with additional support needs and, where possible, children in early years. Our team enjoys a high reputation for innovative practice, curriculum development and excellent learning and teaching. As one of our head teachers you will play a key strategic role as part of the education authority team and as a leader of an excellent staff group.

We are currently seeking applications for a leadership post in the following school:

Doon Academy is a co-educational six-year secondary school located in Dalmellington, Ayrshire, Scotland. The school has around 350 pupils, making it far smaller than the average secondary school of its type. Doon Academy has existed in its current site since 1978, and has seen extensive redevelopment and modernisation over the years. As a result, today the school can boast of a wide range of modern teaching and recreational facilities. The school shares its site with a local primary school, and also hosts its own dedicated Learning Support Centre.

Values and Vision

Doon Academy runs an asymmetrical timetable during the school week, with Wednesdays and Thursdays having shorter school days than Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays. Doon Academy takes great pride in its comprehensive ethos, working hard to ensure that pupils are given equality of opportunity during their time at school, regardless of academic ability or personal background. The school also works hard to provide effective support for pupils looking to understand their options upon leaving school, be it higher education or employment.

Education Scotland Inspection

“Young people have a rich learning experience and benefit from positive relationships with staff and with each other. Most young people feel they are treated fairly and with respect, and that the school is helping them to become more confident. Many speak enthusiastically about their learning and the support and encouragement they receive from adults in various roles. Most young people say that they feel safe and well cared for in school.”
