Job overview

The Governors invite applications for the post of Head of St Andrew's School, Pangbourne from September 2015, to succeed Dr David Livingstone on his retirement.

St Andrew's is a flourishing IAPS co-educational school with around 280 pupils aged 3 to 13. It is principally a day school (Monday to Friday) that has retained a boarding ethos with weekly and occasional boarders. The School is set in 54 acres of magnificent playing fields and woodland, three miles from Pangbourne, in the Berkshire countryside.

St Andrew's combines the highest standards of a traditional prep school with forward-thinking plans and aspirations to enhance its reputation further. In recent years there has been substantial investment in both the fabric of the school and the curriculum, with further significant developments planned. The environment is purposeful and happy, with a strong sense of the unique St Andrew's identity. The boys and girls enjoy a wonderful all-round education. With a commitment to academic rigour and pastoral care, developing intellectual character and independent thinking are at the forefront of the teaching.

Whilst entry is non-selective, pupils invariably move on to a wide range of highly successful senior schools, a significant number gaining academic, music, sport, art and all-rounder scholarships and awards.

St Andrew's benefits from a supportive Board of Governors with a wide range of experience and expertise.

This is a superb opportunity for an inspirational and ambitious leader to take this thriving school on to the next stage of its development. The scope of the job will be all that is expected of a head in a leading co-educational prep school.

St. Andrew’s was founded in 1934 and became a charitable trust administered by a board of governors in 1961. Since 1968 the school has been fully co-educational. The estate extends to 54 acres in magnificent Berkshire countryside between the villages of Pangbourne and Bradfield.

In recent years, the number of pupils has been steady at approximately 290, which is the currently intended maximum. Whilst it is predominantly a day school, ‘flexi-boarding’ operates and many children use this during their time at the school. The aim of the school is to provide the best possible broad-based education for children aged 3 to13. Pupils leave with an impressive number of scholarships. This year, seventeen of our twenty-three sixth form (Year 8) leavers have won awards, including academic, music, art and sports.
