Job overview

Head Teacher in Malawi

Contract term: Fixed Term minimum 3 years, Renewable by mutual agreement.

This is an exciting opportunity to lead a successful Christian school in Malawi.

We need an outstanding school leader to build on our success. Founded in 1995 with just one pupil, we have rapidly grown to become a centre of excellence - with approximately 550 students peaking at 600, high academic standards and a great reputation. An all-through school for children from 2 ½ to 16, we are committed to providing the best possible education for the children of Malawi from all walks of life.

We follow the National Curriculum for England and Wales leading up to the IGCSE examination taken in Year 11.

The majority of students and staff are Malawian, with 10 per cent of students being foreign nationals from Africa. Our students come from a wide range of financial standings such as children of senior ranking government officials and business people, to children of domestic helpers being sponsored by expatriates.

We offer an international style education at an affordable fee in line with the founders' vision which was to bridge the gap between local government schools and the elite international schools. As such our facilities are limited.

Our premises comprise a converted 1960's colonial residence and purpose built standard classrooms. All classrooms have ceiling fans to cater for the warmer months. We have 22 classes in our infant, primary and secondary departments.

THE CANDIDATE SOUGHT

This is a challenging post for an experienced leader to lead the school from strength to strength.

A practising Christian, you must have strong leadership skills and the drive and vision to raise standards further. Crucially, the leader should share our mission to provide a first-class education for all children, particularly those most vulnerable. A knowledge of Africa and work experience in Africa would be preferred.

This is a unique chance to lead a Malawian school with enthusiastic pupils and a supportive governing body. Whilst the demands of an international school such as ours are different to those of a school in the United Kingdom, this is a suitable position for an individual looking to make a difference in the community through a rewarding leadership role suited to both individuals at the genesis and in the twilight years of their career.

The Package

The overall package is more than enough to live comfortably in Malawi and travel in the region.

It includes a modest salary; housing; annual air ticket to home country for Principal (and Spouse where applicable); medical cover; and full school scholarships covering tuition costs of children attending GSIS.

A detailed outline is available for more information.

Interview Expenses

  • Interviews will take place initially via Skype.
  • The final interview will be in Lilongwe, Malawi.
  • Travel and accommodation and subsistence costs will be paid.

A detailed outline is available for more information.

About Good Shepherd International School

Good Shepherd International School was officially opened in September 1995 as a nursery school, by an Ethiopian teacher the Late Mrs. Mulu Sani, who run the school with the help of her husband the Late Mr. Ben Sani, a professional Malawian who served with the Malawian diplomatic service for several years. The school grew by one class each year, and now it is a fully fledged school consisting of Baby Class, Nursery, Reception Class, Primary: (double stream) Years One – Six and Secondary: (single stream) Years Seven - Eleven

The school follows the National Curriculum for England leading up to the IGSCE University of Cambridge Examinations. The first group of students to sit the IGSCE examinations did so in May 2005. The school is also built upon a Christian Foundation – Hence its name, Praying is a part of the Good Shepherd culture and each day begins and ends with a prayer.  Although we are a Christian school, we enrol and respect children of all regions, cultures and races.  At the time of the tragic passing of the founders in a car accident in December 2003, the school had a population of 490 students. Since then the children of the Late Sani’s seized the reigns and have been running this small family run school. To date the school has approximately 600 students, ±60 members of Staff including ±30 teachers, teaching assistants and support staff. Teaching Staff are predominantly Malawian with 20% foreign Africans.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Sani had a vision and deep commitment to provide the best possible educational opportunities for the children of Malawi from all walks of life. The late Mrs. Mulu Sani had a deep compassion for the welfare and education of the African child. Her dream was to assist the orphan child. She was concerned with the thousands of children that were being left alone by dying parents, and who could no longer attend school because there were no family members to support them.

Presently HIV-Aids pandemic is ravaging the most productive members of the society leaving behind increasing numbers of orphans. Children of working class parents spend most of the time at home without and parental/guardian supervision. Consequently they are vulnerable to sexual abuse from domestic workers and neighbours and as such have a high risk of contracting HIV-AIDS. Children who once walked to school with their parents find that they are forced to drop out from school because parents have died and there is no financial help from relatives.

It is against this background, that The Good Shepherd International School was opened. The school aims to create a well disciplined, well rounded individual, healthy in mind and body and God fearing, ready to make an impact on the world.
