Job overview

Headteacher, Cardiff

If you have the vision, the drive and the ambition we can offer an unparalleled opportunity to lead our school on its rapid journey from Special Measures to Excellent.

St Illtyd's is a mixed 11-16 Voluntary Aided Catholic school located in the eastern side of Cardiff, our aim is to insure that all our learners experience high quality teaching which inspires them to make excellent progress and become lifelong learners. We pride ourselves on our care and respect for each other and we celebrate the uniqueness of each individual.

The Governors recognise that there are many challenges ahead in continuing to raise attainment and developing an aspirational culture, but there is an unmistakable momentum to be harnessed by a strong, inspirational leader. The students are confident, eager and have a good attitude to learning. They benefit from a broad, innovative curriculum and enrichment activities.

The Governors are seeking to appoint a Headteacher who:

  • Is a practising Catholic
  • Will have the opportunity to create their own senior team
  • Has a proven track record of raising standards in a school that has been in challenging circumstances
  • Is a strong and inspirational leader with a strategic and innovative vision for the future of the school
  • Will lead by example, with a 'can-do' attitude that can inspire commitment from students, staff and the local community
  • Has proven track record of implementing changes and raising standards in teaching and learning, within a constant, caring, accountable ethos

The Governors have a vision and the real intent to give St Illtyd's a unique signature, which defines it as a centre of excellence within the city's secondary schools. The school offers a significant challenge and this will require a leader who has high expectations and ambitions for the students and will display high energy and stamina that is driven by real enthusiasm.

St Illtyd’s is a Voluntary Aided Mixed Catholic Comprehensive School, catering for pupils of all abilities from 11-16. The De La Salle Brothers opened a Boys’ Catholic School in 1924. The De La Salle Order continued to be the Trustees when the school moved from Splott to its present location. In 1987 re-organisation of Catholic Schools in Cardiff resulted in St Illtyd’s
becoming a mixed comprehensive and changing from an 11-18 to an 11-16 school. The Trusteeship of the school has been transferred from the De La Salle Order to the Archdiocese of Cardiff.

The School has been rebuilt on the same site. It now has the finest possible accommodation for its pupils. At present there are 750 pupils on roll.

Pupils entering in Year 7 are organised into Houses which are divided into 7 registration groups and then into 3 ability bands for teaching.

In line with the requirements of the National Curriculum, the following subjects are taught to all pupils in Years 7, 8 and 9: Religious Education, English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, Spanish or French, Welsh, Music, Drama, Technology, Art and Design, Information Technology, Physical Education and Personal and Social Education.

In Year 10, all pupils follow a core curriculum of Religious Education, English, Mathematics, Science, Welsh, Work Related Education, Personal & Social Education, Health Education and Physical Education. They also have a choice of courses within the following areas of experience: Linguistic, Humanities, Technological, Aesthetic and Vocational. Pupils are able to study subjects from the following list to exam level: History, Geography, Media Studies, French, Spanish, Art, Music, Technology, Physical Education, Child Care, Double Award Science, Information Technology, Computer Literacy and
Information Technology (CLAIT) and Textiles.

The school has developed the vocational aspect of the curriculum in line with National developments of the 14-19 curriculum. Year 10/11 pupils have the opportunity to follow Applied GCSE Courses in Business Studies and Health
and Social Care.

The teaching programme is in the hands of the Heads of Departments, whose responsibility it is to ensure that the students’ work remains uniformly high in standard and open to current developments in educational thought and
practice. In general we try to adopt a positive approach to work and behaviour and recognise effort, achievement and service to the school through a system of merit certificates and prizes for all years.

St. Illtyd’s Catholic High School aims:
