Job overview

Situated in the beautiful English Riviera resort of Paignton, Oldway Primary School is an oversubscribed, Ofsted outstanding, mixed, community primary school with 684 pupils on roll, including 51 part-time nursery places. With a deservedly high reputation for academic, artistic and sporting achievement and an 'Outstanding' judgement in its last four Ofsted inspections, Oldway has been designated a National Teaching School and National Support School. As the lead school in the Torbay Teaching School Alliance, it provides teacher training, CPD, school to school support and leadership development to 38 schools.

Following the recent retirement of our Headteacher, the Governing Body is looking to recruit a visionary and ambitious Headteacher who can build on the school's achievements and:

  • Deliver inspirational and motivational leadership across the school
  • Work with the Governing Body to sustain and further develop the vision and direction of the school
  • Develop the Teaching School and National Support School work to benefit teaching and learning across the South West and enrich and enhance practice within our own school;
  • Keep a relentless focus on the quality of teaching and learning and maintain the school's outstanding status

A Headteacher with substantial experience of school leadership gained in a good or outstanding school, you possess the ambition, skills and experience necessary to lead a school whose performance, reputation and teaching school status offer real opportunity to make a contribution to young people's education both locally and beyond. Applications from National or Local Leaders of Education or from those with a willingness to work towards these designations are particularly desirable. With a highly visible and accessible leadership style, you are able to demonstrate real care and concern for every member of the school community. At the same time, you possess the work ethic and relentless focus upon standards that are at the heart of the school's success and the creative vision, integrity and moral purpose to build upon its achievements.

You are an inspirational leader, with the ability to galvanise and motivate staff, students and parents alike and an effective people manager who is able to both rigorously manage performance and encourage staff to feel truly excited about their work. A highly effective networker, you are experienced in building alliances and partnerships with a broad range of external stakeholders for the benefit of the school and are adept in raising the profile of a school at a local and national level.

In return for your energy, creativity and experience, you will have the opportunity to lead a high achieving and ambitious school, which benefits from children who are conscientious, well behaved, caring, happy and confident. Reflecting the school's ethos of "Excellence and Enjoyment within a learning environment", they are keen to take on responsibility and to rise to challenges. You will work closely with a dedicated team of forward thinking, creative and caring staff and a skilled Governing Body, offering both challenge and support. The position carries a highly attractive salary plus a relocation package, if required, to reward your commitment.

With 684 children on roll and over 100 staff, Oldway is a large community in its own right.  The school is organised into different phases - Foundation, Lower School (years 1 ,2 and 3)  and Upper School (years 4,5 and 6). There are 3 classes in each Year group plus a Nursery, making 22 classes in all!

Oldway is a National Support School and a National Teaching School.  This means that we are committed to leading a group of schools, working with other partners including Exeter University and Plymouth University, to deliver high quality support for teachers and leaders at all stages in their careers.  This prestigious designation is awarded to “outstanding schools with a clear track record of substantial initial teacher training, leadership development and school improvement”. As a result, our pupils and staff benefit from the enthusiasm and creativity of some of the best teachers in the South West, including the best up and coming teachers of tomorrow

The Learning Environment

The recent completion of a superb £1.2 million sports hall and kitchen means that the school boasts facilities for learning that are second to none.  We are fortunate enough to have a large site in Paignton, right next to Oldway Mansion gardens, which encompasses playing fields, an indoor swimming pool, an enclosed safe-play area, an early-years activity garden, an outside classroom and several playgrounds in addition to well-equipped classrooms.  The new buildings themselves include purpose built accommodation for our foundation stage pupils, a conference centre and community rooms.  All this, combined with our existing facilities and the state-of-the-art technology in every classroom, means that Oldway Primary School really is a school for the future.

Curriculum, Learning and Teaching

Oldway Primary School provides a rich, broad, balanced and creative curriculum and believes that excellence in teaching leads to enjoyment of learning.  We define the curriculum as everything that impacts on the learning of our pupils.
Our curriculum gives Oldway a distinct identity and ethos, reflecting our values, our place within the local community of Paignton and an awareness of the wider world in which they live.  Above all, we aim to make our curriculum a hugely rich experience for all our pupils, laying the foundations for success in life.
