Job overview

More House School is at the forefront of education for boys with Specific Learning Difficulties in the UK. An "Outstanding" school for over 10 years. We provide a specialised learning environment for 450 boys from Year 4 to Year 13.

All boys who attend More House are individually timetabled with many receiving support through the on-site Learning Development Centre and the curriculum which challenges each of their strengths whilst helping them to fulfil their academic potential. The school has been judged "Outstanding" by OFSTED in its last three academic inspections and is CReSTeD listed in the Specialist Schools category.

In addition to the core subjects, a wide curriculum is offered with boys able to choose from 19 options for GCSE and 20 for A Level. Results are very good with 71% achieving A*-C at GCSE. Class sizes are small and there is ample opportunity for boys to get involved in the school's extensive arts and performance programme.

The school campus is on a wooded hillside and attractive modern facilities lie above the playing fields. In recent years, the school has built The Simkins Centre for Performing Arts, The Bradbury Music School, The Bradbury Heights Training Centre, and all seven laboratories re-equipped. The School of Engineering opened this academic year and our new Humanities Building and Chapel is due to open in September 2014

  • The Headteacher will be able to inspire and lead a staff of over of 160 and be happy that his number includes cooks, gardeners and cleaners as well as teachers. • The Headteacher will support education in its widest sense and will recognise the school's Catholic Foundation and the traditions which have been followed over the last 75 years. If the Headteacher is not a practising Catholic, he/she will, nevertheless, support its Catholic heritage and see its role in developing the spiritual and moral welfare of all the pupils.
  • The Headteacher will see the school as a business and shoulder the responsibility of recruiting into the school and will be involved in marketing and generating the best publicity for the school.
  • Working with the staff, he/she will enable the children, all of whom are of average intelligence, to access a wide curriculum and achieve success at GCSE, A Level, BTEC and other public examinations, to enter university or take another route to play a worthwhile and economically viable place in society.
  • The Headteacher will support the school's desire to replicate itself in other settings and countries and support the various training programmes which the school has developed and is developing. This may involve releasing staff on secondment.
  • Will have an interest in the development of the school site and educational resources to support the curriculum. He/she will ensure that all buildings are maintained to the highest standards and that outside space is used effectively and is aesthetically pleasing.
  • Will support the school's charitable work, especially in Tanzania.

Outstanding day and boarding school for boy's aged 8-18 who struggle to thrive in a mainstream setting due to speech, language or communication issues.

Considered a national center of excellence, and the largest school of its kind in the UK.

Our aim is to help each boy who joins us, achieve, in the widest possible sense, more than he, or his parents, ever expected. This is accomplished by knowing a great deal about each student – his strengths as well as his difficulties. For his strengths, he must first be helped to identify them and, eventually, change them into a marketable form. His difficulties will not be static. We are mindful that we must be alert to changes caused by a student's own development, those of society and by the curriculum and make sure that each of our students is equipped to meet them.
