Job overview

A unique opportunity to lead a very special school into the future

The Abbey School is an 'outstanding' special school (Ofsted 2009 and 2012) for 100 students aged 11-16, with a range of special educational needs, including autistic spectrum conditions and speech, language and communication difficulties.

Due to the retirement of our highly respected Headteacher, the Governing Body is seeking a multi-talented, highly-motivated individual to lead and inspire our dynamic Senior Leadership Team, dedicated teachers and support staff. The aim of the new Headteacher will be to continue the development of excellent provision for learners of all abilities, enabling them to fulfil their expectations and maximise their future opportunities.

The successful candidate will be:

  • an experienced and exemplary teacher
  • able to demonstrate first-hand experience of senior management and leadership roles
  • an outstanding communicator with strong interpersonal and presentational skills
  • a coach and mentor to other professionals and staff
  • committed to working in partnership with staff, students, parents and governors
  • able to work under pressure whilst retaining a diplomacy and sensitivity to the needs of others in order to pre-empt and diffuse occasional testing situations
  • creative and innovative, with the vision and drive to lead the next stage of The Abbey's development.

You will share our high expectation of pupils' learning and behaviour which underpins the school's vision.

In return, you will enjoy strong support for your own further professional development, working alongside highly committed and supportive colleagues, with motivated and well-behaved students who enjoy learning.

About The Abbey School

The Abbey School is a strong and vibrant special school with places for just over 130 students aged 11-16 years who have learning difficulties and additional needs. Working in a special school is extremely rewarding, and our students continue to amaze us on a daily basis with their attitudes, achievements and behaviour.

We converted to Academy status on 1st September 2018 and are part of the Weydon Multi Academy Trust (WMAT), a dynamic, forward-thinking and innovative Trust. We are currently seven schools – three special schools and four secondaries within the Farnham, Godalming and Haslemere areas.

There are regular opportunities for collaborative working, CPD and the sharing of expertise between staff across the schools. There are also opportunities for staff to join a range of WMAT working groups to further their own continuing professional development.

It is a very exciting time to join our team as we move towards the next stage of our development within WMAT.
