Job overview

Unique Opportunity for an outstanding, visionary leader

We're looking for a new headteacher who shares the vision and enthusiasm of our staff, governors, parents and students. Lavington School has an outstanding reputation, locally and regionally, as somewhere that young people thrive, in an educational environment that's exciting while also being safe and secure.

As a minimum, the successful candidate will need to be more than capable of:

  • Inspiring students, staff, other leaders and parents
  • Increasing the aspirations of young people and helping them to develop their full potential
  • Setting the example for inclusivity; recognising the importance of pastoral care
  • Recognising and valuing the various leadership teams' skill sets, and sustaining team spirit throughout the school

You'll also need to be a good listener, teacher and learner (we don't expect anyone to know it all; your own career progression and development is also important to us).

Lavington is the preferred school of choice with parents, both within and beyond our catchment area. We've enjoyed many years of success, not least in 2014 when we achieved our best GCSE exam results ever. It's a well-run Academy, with a sound financial and management base. The governors have set the bar high for this role, because we need a leader and visionary who can not only maintain our current performance but also take the school to the next level.

If you think you've got what it takes, take a look at the attached information pack, visit our website and read our latest Ofsted Report. If you want to know more, or would like to come and see what makes us different, call the school office on 01380 812352 or email Mrs Becky Dunn: r.dunn@lavington.wilts.sch.uk.

How to apply:

Please complete the online application form (under vacancies on the school's website, www.lavington.wilts.sch.uk) and submit it with a letter to the chair of governors outlining how your experience, knowledge, skills and attributes make you an ideal candidate. Maximum 3 sides of A4.

Closing date: Midday on 6th October 2014
Shortlisting: 7th October 2014
Interviews: 16th and 17th October 2014

If successful, you'll be required to apply for a Disclosure from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

Lavington School, an Academy, is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. You will be expected to report any concerns relating to the safeguarding of children and/or young people in accordance with agreed procedures. If your own conduct in relation to the safeguarding of children or young people gives cause for concern, the schools agreed Child Protection procedures will be followed, alongside implementation of the Authority's Disciplinary Procedure.

At Lavington School we pride ourselves on providing a secure, stable and well-ordered environment based on high educational standards and genuine care and concern for individuals. We work with all students, whatever their ability, to help them achieve their potential.

We aim for students to leave Lavington School as confident young people, ready to take on new challenges with a lifelong love of  learning.  Our students will have resilience and resourcefulness and the wisdom to treat others with respect and courtesy, and this forms the foundation of our ethos.

Our exam results have regularly been in the top 5% nationally and OFSTED judged the school to be 'Good with Outstanding Features' in July 2014. Important as academic achievement is, there is much more to life at Lavington School. We are well known for our successes in sports and outdoor pursuits as well as excelling in art, music and drama.

Many students are involved in charitable work and community projects both within school and the wider community. We are proud of our achievements at Lavington School, but there is always more we can do. By working together, we can shape a future for our young people in which they achieve more than they dreamed possible.

Lavington School is identified as being one of the most successful schools in the country and has been highly rated by Ofsted.  At the heart of this success are the core values that I and the whole school community believe are important:

  • Excellent teaching by experienced, specialist teachers
  • Individual care through an excellent pastoral system
  • High levels of achievement through a challenging academic curriculum chosen to give students the best life chances
  • Innovation in all aspects of education
  • Traditional values of behaviour, appearance and conduct
  • Developing personal leadership through a wide programme of extra-curricular activities.
