Big Wood School, set amongst its own 22 acres of gardens and playing fields, backs on to Bestwood Country Park.  Approximately 750 pupils are on roll, with many year groups being fully subscribed.

We strive for excellence.  ‘Believe Achieve Succeed’, we believe, captures the essence of our aspirations for all of our pupils.

Our modern and welcoming buildings offer us the opportunity to provide state of the art technology to aid teaching and learning.  Furthermore, all faculty areas are well resourced so that the pupils’ experiences at school are varied, exciting and challenging.

Working with a range of industries, businesses and other partners, we ensure that our pupils are thoroughly prepared for the world beyond school.  It is our intention for pupils to leave Big Wood as well rounded, responsible citizens with the ability to make valuable contributions to the world in which they live.

All children, whatever their ability, deserve to be offered the opportunity to achieve their full potential and to this end we offer a curriculum that meets the needs of all.  We have, for instance, an established and expanding G & T programme and are rapidly developing an Achievement for All programme.

Primary transition to secondary school is second to none at Big Wood.  We ensure the smoothest of starts with meticulous attention to detail and close communication with primary schools, pupils and parents.  Each year we organise a summer school for our new starters, as well as offering several opportunities for primary pupils to visit and experience life at Big Wood School.  A learning mentor continues this high level of support once pupils commence their time here, ensuring that they are settled, happy and confident.

Perhaps the secret of our success is that we are large enough to offer a rich and diverse curriculum, yet small enough so that every pupil is well known and cared for as an individual.
