Job overview

Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Education (SEN & Inclusion), Northamptonshire

The University of Northampton is seeking innovative educational professionals to join the thriving academic community within the School of Education.

40 years of excellence in initial teacher training, early years education provision and with a national and international reputation for SEN, we are seeking a dynamic educational professional to join the SEN & Inclusion team.

We particularly welcome applications from educational professionals in schools and other educational organisations

The Special Educational Needs & Inclusion Division is at the forefront of developments in this field with an excellent teaching and research record, including the DfE Endorsed Postgraduate Certificate in Special Needs Coordination operating across the East Midlands region and the RAE 2008 outcome. SEN & Inclusion Divisional staff teach across all School of Education programmes, including Initial Teacher Training; Early Years and the Schools' Wider workforce, ensuring that inclusion is embedded in all our programmes. There is a thriving MA SEN & Inclusion that attracts international students and the SEN & Inclusion modules on the MA Education recruit high numbers of students. The new BA (Hons) SEN & Inclusion has recruited very high numbers in its first year. The majority of our PhD students are studying in this area. The post holder is expected to teach at undergraduate levels and post graduate levels across a range of professional and academic programmes consistent with their specialist knowledge and skills, including work-based and on-line programmes. A key strategic aim is on-line development so as to extend the subject reach, particularly for regional and international students.

All teaching within the School of Education is underpinned by research and scholarly activity, and it is expected that the post holder will contribute to the School of Education's research and enterprise strategy. The School has an established international, national and regional reputation for research in SEN & Inclusion. The School has an excellent reputation in supporting staff making the transition from education practitioner to higher education teaching and research, including support for doctoral study.

The post requires excellent practice-based and theoretical knowledge relevant to the area of SEN & Inclusion; the ability to convey their knowledge and expertise with skill and enthusiasm to a wide-range of students operating at UG and PG levels, including those aiming to enter teaching or an allied profession and practitioners aiming to further develop practice, as appropriate. We are seeking an energetic, enthusiastic, team player who is committed to making a difference to the life opportunities of children and young people through developing professional practice and one who shares our commitment to high quality, innovative approaches to learning and teaching.

The School of Education has an excellent reputation for the quality of its courses and for working effectively in partnership with local authorities and other service providers. It is committed to continually improving learning and teaching opportunities for students, including through work-based learning and placements. The post holder is expected to work within teams drawn from academic and practitioner backgrounds and is expected to develop and maintain a growing network of collaborative links with relevant external organisations and settings.

The School offers courses and consultancy at a range of venues, particularly as part of our continual professional development and outreach activities and growing international activity. Our extensive partnership work involves visiting settings to supervise and support students and working collaboratively with mentors and other staff.
