Job overview

0.8fte, maternity cover for 7 months

Hackney Learning Trust is a department within Hackney Council that is responsible for Hackney's children's centres, 27,000 pupils in 75 schools and early years and adult education. Our vision is to provide excellent education for every child, young person and adult learner.

The Hackney Learning Trust is looking for a literacy specialist to cover a 7 month maternity leave and to lead on the LIT Programme. Developed in 2009, the LIT Programme is a targeted intervention for use with pupils entering secondary school with lower than average levels of literacy. It has been designed to boost the achievement of pupils who enter Year 7 with an English level of 2 or 3 (particularly those whose reading has been assessed at 2b, 2a and 3c). This is an exciting time for the LIT Programme as over a 160 schools, across the UK, use it for accelerating student progression in literacy. The programme has recently been updated to bring it in line with the new National Curriculum and is currently being trialled in a cluster of London schools in preparation for its launch in September 2015.

We greatly welcome applications from both primary and secondary school teachers who are able to demonstrate a strong background in literacy intervention and teacher training.

The successful candidate will need to communicate with confidence and authority about the LIT Programme in a range of contexts including teachers' network meetings, education conferences and training sessions. With your in-depth understanding of literacy and commitment to raising pupil achievement you will be able to run dynamic training sessions for English teachers and teaching assistants with responsibility for delivering the LIT Programme.

For an informal discussion about the post, please contact Sophie Holdforth on 07737976716.

Please apply via our website http://www1.learningtrust.co.uk/jobs/ or contact the HR Administrator on 020 8820 7424 for an application pack.

Closing date: 29th September, 2014 for 12pm
Interview date: Friday 3rd October (interviews will take place from 9am to 12pm)

Hackney Learning Trust is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. Hackney Learning Trust posts can be subject to an enhanced DBS check. About Hackney Education

Hackney Education provides a range of services to support the education of children, young people and adults in our inner London borough. Hackney is one of the UK’s highest performing local authorities, serving one of London’s best places to live and work. Within our diverse borough we serve a wide range of children and young people. We have a particular focus on supporting less advantaged families: Hackney figures in the 10% most deprived boroughs in England on a number of measures.

Hackney Education’s key priority is to improve the life chances of every child, young person and learner: making Hackney the most forward looking education system in the UK, where schools, settings and partners provide an exciting environment which ensures inclusion and success for everyone. We see our borough as being one of the best places in the country for young people to grow, learn, develop and achieve – and one of the best places for colleagues to work and thrive in our education system.

We are also working towards our vision, which is to be a place for everyone; where residents and staff can be proud; a place that celebrates diversity and where everyone can feel valued, included and involved. In order to achieve this, we look for people who are: Proud; Ambitious; Pioneering; Open; Proactive; Inclusive.

Hackney Council works to eradicate discrimination on the basis of race, religion, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, pregnancy and maternity, age and marital status. We also recognise that people can be disadvantaged by their social and economic circumstances, so we will also work to eliminate discrimination and disadvantage caused by social class. We also welcome those interested in flexible working. We particularly welcome applications from disabled people and people from a black and ethnic minority background as these groups are currently under represented in our workforce.
