Job overview

Dean Close School is a thriving independent, co-educational day and boarding school set on a beautiful 50-acre site on the edge of Cheltenham. The School currently has approximately 900 pupils between the ages of 3-18 years. Founded in 1886, Dean Close has a strong Christian ethos and is a happy and supportive working environment.

The Senior School (Years 9-13) is seeking to appoint a part time teacher of Literacy and Curriculum Support to start in September 2014 or as soon as possible thereafter.

It is a very busy and diverse department with a full time Head of Department, one part time Numeracy Support teacher and three part-time Curriculum Support teachers. Together they form a highly committed, well-skilled team. Although the main role of Learning Support is to provide Literacy Support, Numeracy Support and Curriculum Support, the department is proactive in raising achievement throughout the school. To this end, it also deals with trouble shooting in the 6th form and supports Common Room in the production of differentiated lessons. Learning Support is a solution based service, aiming to provide effective support for any learning need that presents itself.

The Literacy and Curriculum Support position reports to the Head of Learning Support and involves teaching a part time timetable of about 12 lessons per week (c 40%), but this could be more for the right candidate.

Literacy Support is a structured programme for pupils who need additional help with literacy skills on entry to the Senior School in Year 9.

Curriculum Support is a one-to-one service where 'weak all round' pupils have the benefit of individual help in any curriculum area. Pupils attending Curriculum Support are able to bring along any task where they want help. Many pupils adopt this pattern quickly, but less well-organised pupils require the teacher always to have appropriate tasks to work on.

Requirements:

The successful candidate needs to be able to provide constructive support with considerable flexibility. Ideally, we require experience of teaching literacy and curriculum support in a secondary school and preferably a SpLD qualification. He/she should have a broad based

education, a good degree and a high level of ICT skills. Creativity, enthusiasm, versatility, a strong work ethic and an empathetic approach are very important. He/she should have a good understanding of effective study skills and be able to build confidence in those who are taught. Working within the Learning Support department he/she will have access to departmental resource material. However, the teacher will also be encouraged to develop their own resources and to liaise closely with other members of the Common Room to understand the curriculum requirements of the pupils they are teaching. The teacher will also be required to support the Head of Department as reasonably required. New initiatives and ideas are welcomed and encouraged.

Other duties and responsibilities:

  • Attend Parents' Receptions
  • Attend INSET at start of terms

Application Process

Completed application forms and a CV, together with a covering letter should be returned to the HR Manager, Dean Close School, Shelburne Road, Cheltenham, GL51 6HE. Tel 01242 258086, Email: hr@deanclose.org.uk by 12.00 noon, Monday 22nd September 2014.

Closing date: Apply by 12pm noon Monday 22nd September 2014

Dean Close School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. Applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service

Dean Close School is a co-educational day and boarding school which provides continuity of education from age 2+ to 18. The School was established in 1886, and is set in 50 acres of parkland in the centre of Cheltenham.
Dean Close is renowned for focusing on individual development, helping to nurture each person's strengths and talents. The small classes and excellent learning facilities ensure good, above average academic results. A strong tradition of music, art, sport and drama and a wide spectrum of extra curricular activities make it possible for every child to achieve success and confidence.
The School also offers academic, sports, music, drama, art and all-rounder scholarships.

Ethos

In his speech at this year's Commemoration, the Headmaster stated that:

".... I do not believe that examination results are fundamentally what Dean Close is about or what makes us an outstanding school. It is the formation of character and the acquisition of a value system that will enable young people to live life to the full. These values centre on service to the community and on character traits such as integrity, fortitude, courage, endeavour, loyalty, willingness to take appropriate risks, kindness and love. If schools do not attempt to lay down the bedrock of a value system for young people, society has no hope for the future."

Making a difference is central to the Dean Close ethos. Carpe Diem is more than just a motto. We do not believe that happiness and well-being can simply be taught through timetabled lessons, the unique value of each individual needs to be modelled, lived and enshrined in the School's value system. Dean Close is a Christian school and community. The Christian faith is seen as life-enhancing and dynamic and therefore a positive force in the School even to the many who do not share this faith.

The School's Christian foundation and tradition is very evident in everyday life through the mutual respect and openness of relationships between pupils and between staff and pupils as well as through the emphasis on spiritual as well as academic and personal development. Visitors to Dean Close regularly comment on the friendly welcome they receive, the confidence and maturity of the pupils they meet and the warmth of the community. Dean Close is a place where every individual's talents are seen as important and where every day is seen as an opportunity to do something exciting.

Community, love and relationship lie at the heart of the School.
