Job overview

Full time (minimum 35 hours)

Located near Rochester, Medway Secure Training Centre (STC) provides secure accommodation, education and care for young people aged 12 to 17 years who have been remanded or sentenced to periods of detention and we are now looking for an enthusiastic, motivated and dedicated PE Teacher to join us and deliver high quality, inspiring and challenging PE lessons to the young people in our care.

About Medway Secure Training Centre

From the moment a young person arrives at Medway, we start planning how to meet their needs through the provision of an effective education and resettlement programme which provides opportunities to gain social, life and educational skills whilst giving them the best possible chance to turn their lives around and break the cycle of offending behaviour upon release. The whole education team work alongside residential staff to regularly review the progress made by each young person and this ensures that improvement targets are meaningful and achievable, whilst linking behaviour management and educational outcomes.

Many of our young people have had little involvement in education prior to their stay with us, so we place great emphasis on improving their core skills whilst creating bespoke packages of one-to-one support to enhance their learning across a wide range of subjects. Our education provision follows the National Curriculum and young people are taught in small groups to maximise their learning opportunities.

About You

As a resourceful and adaptable team player with effective communication and interpersonal skills, you'll need a PGCE pre or post 16 qualification along with experience in teaching PE to Key Stages 3 and 4. Strong organisational skills coupled with the ability to motivate, inspire and bring out the best in others along with a non-judgmental and open-minded attitude are essential.

This is a diverse role, but not easy as the young people at Medway STC can be unpredictable and present challenging behaviour at times. As part of our education team, you'll need to be confident and resilient with plenty of life experience, common sense and a firm but fair approach, but most of all, you'll need a real commitment to helping the young people make a fresh start and release their true potential.

Benefits

As one of the world's largest private sector employers with operations in over 120 countries and more than 620,000 employees worldwide, we can offer you a great range of benefits including a local sector comparable teachers pension scheme, 52 days' annual leave, career development and support and the opportunity to do an extraordinary job - every day.

G4S is the largest secure outsourcing company in the UK and Ireland, with a turnover of more than £1.7 billion and over 55,000 employees managed from over 100 offices. More than 10,000 customers, including 59 FTSE 100 companies and the majority of UK Government Departments, depend on G4S to provide them with a safe and secure way to deliver their services.

As part of G4S Central Government Services, G4S Children’s Services manages three purpose-built Secure Training Centres (STCs) in Milton Keynes, Rochester and Rugby on behalf of the Youth Justice Board for England and Wales.

At our STCs, teams of committed people look after young people aged 12 to 17 years old who have been remanded or sentenced to periods of detention. We work closely with the Home Office, the Youth Justice Board and the Ministry for Justice, to ensure that our regimes and designs reflect best practice in residential care to prevent offending.

During their time with us, the young people attend school lessons at our on-site education facilities, as well as taking part in offending behaviour programmes designed to help them address the actions and attitudes that led them into custody. Our aim for all of the young people who come to one of our STCs, is to help them understand why they have come to us and give them the support and guidance they need for when they are released.

The policies and aims of our STCs are derived from the principles of childcare best practice and reflect the Every Child Matters agenda. The aim is to create a living environment that helps address the cycle of offending behaviour and one that is consistent with the needs of developing the boys and girls in our care.
