About Rumukoroshe School

Diversity - EnjoymentExcellence - Partnership - Learning

Rumukoroshe School is operated by the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria (SPDC). It is located in the Shell Residential Area in Port Harcourt. The core purpose of the school is to provide an excellent primary and Middle Years education (term child turns 3 up to 14yrs) for children of Shell expatriate staff posted to SPDC in Port Harcourt. Admissions for Shell Nigerian and expatriate contractor/third party employees are accepted based on qualifications as outlined in the school’s Admissions Policy.

The school has a clear focus on children’s learning through the Literacy and Maths frameworks from England, the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) and the International Middle Years Curriculum (IMYC). In 2014, Rumukoroshe School was accredited by the IPC at Mastering level – the highest level. The school’s shared values are summarized by its ‘DEEP Learning’ tagine. Learning is implemented through themes with subjects, including maths and literacy, being integrated yet separate.

For further information please visit: www.greatlearning.com/ipc

Physical Education(PE), Swimming lessons, ICT, Art and Music also build into the theme in the timetable and other learning opportunities are available through After School Activities run by teachers, parents and members of the community. The school also offers learning of a modern foreign language as part of the curriculum.

The school population is made of many different nationalities and this is celebrated across the curriculum. Key festivals from different cultures are also celebrated and our children have a strong sense of international mindedness – they celebrate and value the diversity of cultures in their world. We currently have 100 children in school, from Pre-Nursery through to Middle Years.

Supporting our international learning community, we accept applications for teaching positions from qualified, experienced teachers from many nationalities.

Personal learning is a constant focus across the school and children are very aware of each other’s expectations of them, and the expectations of teachers and other adults within our learning community.

Our facilities, in addition to well-equipped classrooms, include a Gymnasium, an ICT suite (plus laptops and computers in every classroom), Wi-Fi capability across the school, a newly refurbished kitchen and mini science lab, a playing field with playground equipment and a library with over 10,000 books! We use the Shell Club pool for our school swimming programme.

Rumukoroshe School also hosts sports tournaments with other schools from around Port Harcourt/Nigeria and continues to look for opportunities to share learning with other schools in different ways. We run events through the year – Christmas Concert, Sports Day, Swimming Gala, Book Week, sometimes jointly with the Total School which is on the camp adjoining ours. The school also supports the local community through fund-raising events run by the PSG or children (School Council), donating resulting funds to local orphanages and other causes.

We have an active Parents Support Group which supports school events and all parents are encouraged, and do, take an active role in school related activities and events. All staff, and most of our children/families, live in the Shell Residential Area. Houses are provided for all staff. They have spacious interiors and large gardens. Under current company guidelines, we only leave the camp, under escort, for scheduled shopping trips (every two weeks). Otherwise, life is on the camp. The camp is, however, a very pleasant environment. There are two small shops for groceries, swimming pool, golf club with a restaurant and bar, tennis courts, squash courts, gym facilities, parks and playground for children and a community activity centre which hosts events such as quiz nights, theme nights, wine-tasting evenings, a weekly fun run event etc. The community is very social and there are always activities events taking place. It is a great place to bring up a young family.
