Job overview

Principal, Kingston upon Hull

We are an established Pupil Referral Unit which converted to become an alternative provision academy in April 2013. We have already taken some significant steps forward to realise our vision but now want to recruit a dynamic and visionary Principal to help us become a lead provider of alternative education in Hull and East Yorkshire. In return, we can offer you the opportunity to lead a dedicated team to meet the exciting challenge of turning our vision into a reality.

Ashwell Academy is a 40 place alternative provision for 11-16 year olds situated on the outer northern edge of Kingston upon Hull. The local authority and schools directly commission short-term placements for children who are struggling in mainstream education, particularly those who have been, or are at risk of, permanent exclusion with the aim to returning them to mainstream education. We also provide DSEN students with longer-term placements in situations where other appropriate provision is not available.

The academy provides a strong learning culture which enables all students to achieve their potential in a safe and supportive environment, delivered by a team of highly experienced specialist teachers and high level teaching assistants, in small groups of eight students. The intensive curriculum concentrates on core skills to accelerate learning and students have the opportunity to gain nationally recognised qualifications to promote life-long learning in both academic and vocational fields. Additional provision is available to schools and is delivered through our teaching kitchen and, from September 2014, a new centre offering training and education in a range of building trades including bricklaying, plastering, painting and decorating.

We also offer a wide range of additional student support including regular visits by an educational psychologist to identify barriers to learning and enable us to put in place the support to meet the health, well-being and safeguarding needs of our students.

The governors are looking for a passionate and dynamic leader to accelerate our drive towards excellence and build on our most recent Ofsted judgment of 'good'. With professional and enthusiastic staff and a clear vision for the future, we have a solid foundation upon which to build.

As Principal, you will lead our ambitious drive to become an outstanding provider of alternative provision and training in the area and further develop our reputation for excellence within Hull and the East Riding.

To arrange an informal discussion with our Chair of Governors, Mrs Eunice Evans, please contact the academy on 01482 331720 or email her at eunice@evanshull.karoo.co.uk.

Application information is available below or email HeadteacherPack@hullcc.gov.uk any queries please contact Mrs Weedon (01482 616611)

Completed applications should be submitted to HeadteacherPack@hullcc.gov.uk by 12 noon Monday  28 April 2014. Interviews will take place on: 15/16 May 2014.

Ashwell  Academy  is committed to the safeguarding  and promoting the welfare of all children and young people and expects all staff to share this commitment. This post is subject to an enhanced DBS check and satisfactory references.

The Compass Academy prides itself on providing the highest standard of education to all students, regardless of their background.

We believe that those who have the least should be given the most. We achieve this through providing all pupils, but particularly those who have the most challenging and complex backgrounds, with a rigorous and academic education which challenges them, not only academically, but also in terms of their place in society.

We teach Character Education to prepare our pupils for life beyond the school gates and to give them the opportunity to flourish in modern society. We believe that there is a strong link between character and attainment, and that success is not measured simply by quantifiable outcomes such as test results and attendance figures. Achievement is praised through good attitudes towards learning coupled with good effort.

We believe that if you look after the whole child, then everything else will fall into place. Developing our pupils to have skills alongside knowledge is the key to success. All our pupils get the chance to achieve, be resilient, tolerate others and make great choices for life – in and outside school.

We strive to create an environment where each individual can flourish irrespective of their previous difficulties. We take a holistic approach to developing our pupils from support for families, to bespoke educational programmes leading to successful onward transition.

Together we will create powerful and collective experiences of compassion, courage, achievement & meaning. Ultimately, supporting & encouraging our pupils to chart their own course through life as successful citizens. We believe each and every member of our Compass family has the right to be successful, feel valued, loved and cared for.

The journey to success starts here!
