Job overview

Moor House School & College is an Ofsted Outstanding, co-educational, non-maintained day and residential special school for children with severe speech and language impairments, providing bespoke teaching and therapy services to 81 children in Moor House School and 29 young people in its recently established Sixth Form College. Established in 1947, Moor House is nationally recognised as a school which initiated, and continues to lead the specialist educational field for children with specific speech and language impairment.

Students follow the National Curriculum, which is adapted to meet individual needs. Every class has a tutor, a dedicated Speech and Language Therapist, Special Teaching Assistant and access to an Occupational Therapist. The school recognises that pupils require structured learning which builds and develops both conceptual understanding and communication, along with social skills. All students are expected to achieve nationally recognised qualifications and accreditations that match their learning potential.

The current Principal retires in April 2015 and the Governing Body is looking to appoint a new Principal to:

  • provide inspirational and motivational leadership across the school
  • develop and communicate a shared mission that expresses the core values of the school and work closely with all key stakeholders to achieve that mission
  • maintain a relentless focus on the quality of both teaching and learning and therapy provision - and on the provision of residential care
  • take an innovative and entrepreneurial approach to assessing and further developing the school's resources, including support services

You are currently a Headteacher or a successful Deputy with substantial experience of special school leadership - specific experience of communication disorders is not essential. An enthusiastic and inspirational leader, you have the drive, ambition and high standards to build on our achievements and take us to the next level. You combine extensive experience of the use of school data management systems for tracking and monitoring pupil progress and attainment with creative and innovative approaches to teaching and learning. An effective people manager, you have the interpersonal skills and high professional standards to engage with and motivate staff, learners and parents alike and the focus and drive needed for whole school management.

In return for your integrity, experience, resilience and dynamism, we are able to offer you the opportunity to lead a flagship institution with an engaged, supportive and highly qualified governing body and a talented and highly dedicated team of teachers, speech and language therapists, teaching assistants, occupational therapists and care professionals who all share a real commitment to maximizing opportunities for our pupils and equipping them to lead fulfilling and independent lives.

Moor House School & College is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people; all staff and volunteers are expected to share this commitment. Applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with previous employers and the Disclosure Barring Service.

Moor House School& College is a registered charity (number 311871) committed to Equal Opportunities and welcomes applications from all sections of the community.

Closing date for applications: Monday 20th October 2014
Interviews: Wednesday 12th and Thursday 13th November 2014
