Job overview

Rare opportunity to lead a unique school - Bacon's College is seeking to appoint its new Principal

Bacon's College in Southeast London is a highly regarded, multicultural, diverse and inclusive inner-city Secondary Academy. The College is steeped in tradition but has its sights set on the future. Judged by Ofsted in March 2013 as 'Good', it is on an upward trajectory with a great deal of momentum and on a path to 'Outstanding'. Bacon's College's Trustees and Governors are now seeking to appoint a new Principal to help the College to realise its full potential.

The school is an Anglican Foundation designated as a College with 'a religious character'. The main school has almost 1100 pupils with approximately 185 in the Sixth Form. It has won a plethora of awards and in 2011 gained International School Status. It has a Sports and Leisure Centre on site which is managed by the school.

The College's policies and procedures are underpinned by its values - care & generosity of spirit, fairness & justice, honesty & integrity, reconciliation & forgiveness, inclusivity & outreach.

Key objectives for the new Principal include ensuring the school maintains its momentum and upward trajectory in order to reach its objective of becoming 'Outstanding'. The new Principal will lead on initiatives such as the enablement of Independent Learning and stay committed to preserving, living and promoting the College's core values.

As the successful candidate, you will demonstrate a genuine passion for education. This is a unique school in a number of ways but does face the same challenges as other inner city schools. You will therefore be a visible, accessible part of the school and a strong, confident manager of people.

You will have ability to gain the buy-in and respect of all stakeholders and take them with you on the journey to the realisation of the school's vision and goals. You will be an accomplished transformational leader; you will have a broad understanding of the wider social, economic and political picture, and be effective at translating this into the school environment.

You will put a high value on creativity and the potential of collaboration. You will be an effective networker, be aware of your surroundings and be able to identify opportunities for working with other schools, partners and individuals to drive the school forward, enhance the pupils' education and give back to the wider schools community. You will be emotionally intelligent and sensitive and be a source of inspiration and aspiration. You will be proactive and have a desire to be at the cutting edge of education.

You may or may not be a practising Christian. You will, however, have a sound and empathetic understanding and appreciation of the Christian faith.

You will receive valuable support from the Southwark Diocesan Board of Education and the Harris Trust in order to help you succeed as the new Principal of Bacon's College. This is a successful and highly regarded inner city Academy. Taking this school forward will be rewarding, challenging and career-enhancing.

In Spring 2018, Bacon’s College will be joining United Learning, a large, and growing, group of schools aiming to offer a life-changing education to children and young people across England.

Our schools work as a team and achieve more by sharing than any single school could. Our subject specialists, our Group-wide intranet, our own curriculum and our online learning portal all help us share knowledge and resource, helping to simplify work processes and manage workloads for an improved work-life balance.

As a Group, we can reward our staff better: with good career opportunities, better pay, benefits, and ultimately, the satisfaction of helping children to succeed. We invest in our staff wellbeing. Our academies each have at least eight INSET days per year (with three of those solely dedicated to planning), and an ongoing group-wide wellbeing programme. It's an ethos we call ‘the best in everyone’.
