Job overview

RE Teacher, Newcastle upon Tyne

The Governors wish to appoint an excellent RE teacher to join St Mary's. The role may appeal to candidates seeking their first teaching post or, equally, to recently qualified or more experienced teachers, looking to develop in an outstanding school which is totally committed to RE. RE is a core subject in KS3 and in KS4, where all students follow a full GCSE. RE is also very popular as an A level subject and all Sixth Formers study a general RE course. Please note that it is not an essential requirement of this post to be Catholic. We are looking to appoint a teacher with a passion for providing an excellent holistic education for students and a commitment to promoting the school's distinctive, Catholic/Christian ethos.

The department is officially rated Outstanding. It is a great place to work and provides excellent job satisfaction, as it is a very supportive environment. We provide excellent CPD for NQTs and recently qualified teachers, as well as on-going training for more experienced teachers. There are opportunities for teachers at all levels to help develop teaching and learning across the school, working collaboratively with teachers from other departments, whether as coaches, researchers or SLEs. The working environment is, therefore, a very stimulating one for all staff and is an added attraction of this post.

RE is a well-established and successful department with an Outstanding inspection rating. In 2013:-

  • At GCSE, 65% of students achieved A* - C (full year group entry). 23% of grades were A* and A.
  • At A Level, there was a 100% pass rate. 65% of grades were A* - C grades.
  • Key Stage 3 results are very strong too, with very able cohorts in the school.

St Mary's is a very successful, popular and happy school, rated Outstanding by Ofsted and the Diocese. We became an academy in 2013 and enjoy superb facilities in a brand new building which opened in 2011. We are also a National Support School, increasingly engaged in school to school support, as well being one of 3 core partners in the Northern Lights Teaching School Alliance.

At whole school level, St Mary's continues to perform very strongly. Highlights include:-

  • 3 Outstanding inspections in the last 5 years.
  • Top 100 most improved schools nationally, 2005-8, 2006-9 and 2009-12.
  • Top quintile ranking for 11 out of 12 performance measures in Ofsted's data dashboard.
  • 73% 5+ A*-C with English and Maths in 2013, with exceptional pupil progress measures.
  • Top 3 position nationally in "similar schools" measure (source: DfE Performance Tables).
  • Growing post-16 sector with strong achievement. Numbers forecast to grow from 160 to 300+.
  • Oversubscribed with a rising roll (850 in 2009 - c.1200 in September 2014).

The Governors wish to appoint a teacher with:-

  • A strong commitment to understanding and promoting the school's Catholic/Christian ethos.
  • A passion for providing the best possible holistic education for all students.
  • A commitment to maximising achievement through excellence in teaching and learning.
  • A passion for contributing to the development of our RE department at a very exciting time.
