About The British School In Cairo

Our Profile

The British School in Cairo (BSC) aims to offer a high standard of education through the adoption of the main principles of learning and teaching, as reflected in the English National Curriculum. The school was set up in 2004 with an affiliation to Worldwide Educational Services, which has since become part of CfBT. BSC still receives an annual training and support visit from a CfBT consultant. The school boasts a strong body of dedicated professionals of diverse nationalities and is this year celebrating its tenth year of success, with ever-growing student admissions.

Although our pupils are nearly all second-language learners, academic standards are high, as shown in SAT and IGCSE results each year, which generally compare favourably to those in the UK. Nearly all students go on to enter state, private or international universities in Egypt, or universities abroad. Many BSC school leavers have won university scholarships in recent years, and a few have also gained Cambridge Achievement Awards for attaining top scores across the whole country in their IGCSE exams.

BSC has a partnership agreement with the British University of Egypt (BUE) and has for many years served as an examination centre for IGCSE exams, with annual inspections of facilities by the British Council in Cairo.

Class sizes are quite small, with average class sizes now standing at about 20 students and a maximum of 25 per class. Each class up to and including Year 8 also benefits from a bilingual, graduate Teaching Assistant/Learning Support Teacher. Pupil behaviour and motivation to learn is generally very good.

Extra-curricular provision is rich and varied, with a significant and growing number of in-school and after-school clubs and activities, field trips, concerts, plays, performances, sports tournaments, activities and school camps.

The buildings are well equipped, with an Interactive White Board and air conditioning in each classroom, a well stocked pupil library and teacher resource room and an all-weather, heated indoor swimming pool. There is a full-time school doctor and clinic and a creche for staff members' babies and toddlers.

The school offers staff a generous amount of paid holidays, including eight weeks in summer, from end-June to late August, a fortnight at both Christmas/New year and Easter, a week's half-term break in the first two terms, as well as a summer term long weekend break and all the many Egyptian public holidays and Eid breaks. It offers opportunities for professional development, encouraging staff to attend various in-house and external INSET opportunities.

The cost of living in Egypt remains low, with accommodation and living costs generally accounting for less than half of net teacher salaries.
