Job overview

Senior Lecturer in Education (Teacher Education): ITT to NQT Transition, Northamptonshire

The University of Northampton is seeking innovative educational professionals to join the thriving academic community within the School of Education.

40 years of excellence in initial teacher training, early years education provision and with a national and international reputation for SEN, we are seeking a dynamic educational professional to join as Senior Lecturer in Education with responsibilities for transition from ITT to NQT.

We particularly welcome applications from senior leaders in schools and other educational organisations.

The University of Northampton is seeking to appoint a Senior Lecturer in Education (ITT to NQT Transition Leader). This is a full-time Senior Lecturer in Education at an appropriate point on Grade 8 plus honorarium.

Initial Teacher Training is the largest taught portfolio in the School of Education and makes a significant contribution to the University's regional engagement mission. The School has an excellent regional and national reputation for the quality of its programmes. The School's ITT programmes (early years; primary; secondary; post-compulsory; UG and PG) have achieved grades 1 or 2 in all Ofsted inspections across the last decade. Our ITT programmes also have a strong reputation for high retention, employment and trainee satisfaction rates and we are currently one of the highest rated providers by NQTs for the quality of our early reading and systematic synthetics phonics training. The School of Education has an excellent reputation for its teaching and research and is committed to continually improving the learning, teaching and assessment opportunities for students.

This role has been developed in response to the current shifts in initial teacher training (ITT) and proposed changes to its inspection by Ofsted. It is anticipated that in a context of further (as yet unknown) developments, the specific duties associated with the role will change over time. However, it is expected that the role will include the following:

  • Co-ordinating development work with schools to ensure School Direct places are secured for September 2015 and beyond
  • Co-ordinating development work with schools to ensure the new arrangements for inspection of ITT that relate to NQTs are in place and managed effectively
  • Co-ordination of School Co-ordinators
  • Ensuring relationships with School Direct and other partnership schools are maximised for mutual benefit

All teaching within the School of Education is underpinned by research and scholarly activity, and it is expected that the successful candidate will contribute to the School of Education's research and consultancy strategy. For applicants who are currently working as practitioners, the School offers an extensive programme of staff development linked to teaching in higher education and support for further study at higher degree level and developing research activity. All academic staff are expected to gain HEA recognition and doctoral level qualifications.

The School offers courses at a range of venues, particularly as part of our continual professional development and outreach activities. Our extensive partnership work involves visiting schools and settings to supervise and support students and working collaboratively with settings' staff. The post holders will therefore need to be able to travel effectively. Expenses are paid at an agreed rate.
