City College Brighton and Hove has an innovative and forward thinking approach to ensuring we provide web based software solutions that best meet the needs of the college.
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Software Developer to maintain and develop bespoke and 3rd party systems that are integral to supporting and enhancing teaching and learning within a college environment.
The role will provide opportunities to develop skills beyond the purely technical in areas such as e-learning, project management, specification development and engaging with staff from across the college.
The ideal applicant will be organised, highly motivated, able to work in a pressured environment and have a proven track record in developing web based solutions from concept through to completion.
The key technologies involved are PHP, SQL, JavaScript (jQuery), CSS and HTML. You must have in depth knowledge and experience in these areas, as well as in the use of object orientated programming.
The successful applicant will report to the Head of e-learning and professional development and will be required to work in collaboration with staff from across the college.
Previous experience of Further Education would be an advantage.
Person Specification
Essential:
- Evidence of significant experience of HTML, CSS, PHP, SQL and JavaScript development.
- Knowledge of object orientated programming in PHP.
- Awareness of and ability to work to deadlines.
- Effective prioritisation and organisational skills.
- Good inter-personal and communication skills.
- Substantial recent experience in a software development project environment.
- Significant experience in data modelling, relational database schemas and design, relational database performance tuning and problem solving.
- Ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team.
- Experience of good software working practices and production of technical design documentation.
- Flexible approach to problem solving.
- A desire to learn and develop new skills.
- An ability to respond to changes in situation and to deal positively with setbacks.
Desirable:
- Degree or professional qualification in a related area.
- Knowledge of a Virtual Learning Environment (preferably Moodle).
- Knowledge of an electronic learner records system (preferably Unit-e).
- Some knowledge of processes and procedures within an FE environment.
- Experience of front-end application design.
- Appreciation and understanding of a broad range of database related technologies.
- A broad knowledge of information technology.
- Ability to identify opportunities for applying information technology to meet the needs of the college, especially in relation to teaching and learning.
