Job overview

We are seeking to appoint an outstanding Science practitioner, with a proven track record as a leader in both raising achievement and leading a team, to become Head of our improving Science department. As Subject Leader for Science you will have a key responsibility in raising achievement and managing change in this subject. The successful applicant will best meet these criteria regardless of specialism, although Physics and/or Chemistry are desirable.

The Rye Hills Science team will comprise of eight full and part-time Science teachers - including Subject Leader, Assistant Subject Leader and College Director, who will also act as line manager for this position. Successful candidates will bring with them innovative and creative ideas for delivering outstanding lessons across Key Stages 3 and 4, stretching and inspiring our students to raise achievement across the board.

The role and responsibility includes:

  • Leading, managing and further developing the Science department;
  • Raising standards of student attainment and achievement in Science;
  • Ensuring a balanced, relevant and differentiated Science curriculum is delivered to all of our students;
  • Providing students with high quality extra-curricular opportunities.

The successful applicant will:

  • Be an outstanding classroom practitioner;
  • Have experience of teaching Science at Key Stages 3 and 4;
  • Demonstrate the necessary skills and experience to lead and hold responsibility for a department;
  • Have an understanding of strategies for raising attainment;
  • Have an ability to inspire, motivate and engage students and colleagues
  • Be a committed, highly competent, reflective and resilient individual.

In 2013 the Governing Body approved an innovative new collegiate structure, linking subjects together in different ways to promote joint practice development, leadership opportunities and learning and teaching innovation. The introduction of the collegiate system has enabled teachers to work together in new and exciting ways with the primary focus of moving the school forward and improving the outcomes for our young people.

Rye Hills School is a mainstream secondary school based in Redcar in Cleveland. It is a community school for girls and boys between the ages of 11 and 16. It is a non-denominational establishment. At the moment, there are around 841 students being educated at the school.

The school’s work in promoting pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is effective. Pupils know how to keep themselves and others safe at school, in the wider community and online. Bullying is rare and pupils are confident that staff will address any problems that arise. The school’s arrangements to safeguard pupils are effective. The curriculum is well planned and contains a good balance of subjects. In key stage 4, pupils are able to select and follow different curriculum pathways which are best suited to their individual interests, skills and abilities.”
