About St Mary's Church of England Primary School, Northchurch

St. Mary's was founded in 1864 as an Endowed Church of England School to serve the families of Northchurch. The original building with its Victorian stained glass window is still in use.

In 1971, along with similar schools in the area, St. Mary's became a First School and part of the Berkhamsted three tier system. Extensions to the school were built in the 1960s, when six new classrooms, a hall and administration offices were added. At this time land was acquired to provide us with a playing field. We are fortunate in having the River Bulbourne running through the grounds, with the Grand Union Canal on the other side of the field.

On the 26th November 2012 it was agreed by Hertfordshire County Council Cabinet to change the educational provision in Berkhamsted to the more conventional Two-Tier system. The last two years has seen many changes to the provision in the town as the First, Middle and Upper schools change their age ranges.

St Mary’s First School will become a one-form entry Primary school from September 2014. The admissions policy and criteria are those of the Governing Body, which will admit the DCFS Standard Number of 30 children to the Reception Class each academic year.

Recognising our historic foundation we seek to preserve and develop our religious character in accordance with the principles of the Church of England and in partnership with the churches at parish and diocesan level. We aim to serve our community by providing an education of the highest quality within the context of Christian belief and practice.

St. Mary’s seeks to encourage an understanding of the meaning and significance of faith, thereby promoting Christian values through the experience it offers to all its pupils.

With a whole-hearted commitment to putting our Christian faith and spiritual development at the heart of St Mary's, we aim to:

  • achieve excellence in all that we do
  • deliver the highest standards of teaching and learning
  • develop happy, confident and resilient children, instilled with a life-long love of learning
  • create an environment where everyone in the school can reach their full potential
  • encourage mutual respect, acceptance and tolerance throughout our community
  • encourage a true partnership between the school, pupils, parents, the parish, governors and the Local Authority, for the benefit of our children
