The Role

As a qualified Design and Technology teacher you will be familiar with the National Curriculum of England and confident teaching secondary age students.  You will be an excellent communicator who gets on well with colleagues, students, parents, technology and change.  Amongst other things, you will be well organised, have a good sense of humour and want to develop opportunities for students in and out of the classroom, providing opportunities for participation and the promotion of excellence.

We are looking for someone who will:

  • Use teaching methods which will engage students and stimulate pupils' intellectual curiosity including the use of effective questioning, clear presentation and good use of resources
  • Set high expectations for pupils' behaviour, establishing and maintaining a good standard of behaviour management through well focused teaching and through positive and productive relationships in accordance with the rules and behaviour policy of the school
  • Identify clear teaching objectives, content, structures and sequences of lessons appropriate to the educational needs of the pupils in his/her class
  • Set appropriate, realistic yet demanding expectations for pupils' learning, building on prior attainment/knowledge
  • Know how to prepare and present informative reports to parents in  a professional manner based upon monitoring procedures adhered to within the school
  • Understand the need to take responsibility for their own professional development and to keep up to date with research and developments in pedagogy as relevant to their own department and mainstream departments
  • Interact on a professional level with colleagues and seek to establish and maintain productive relationships in order to promote mutual understanding of the school curriculum with the aim of improving the quality of teaching and learning in the school
  • Select appropriate resources which enable teaching objectives to be met by all learners.

British International School Washington (BISW) is a mixed, non-denominational all-through school with sixth form situated in Washington DC, United States of America. It is an independent school that holds the status of an International Baccalaureate (IB) World school, with IB Middle Years and Primary Curricula. It caters for around 550 students across over 70 nationalities with students between the ages of 2-18. Its languages of instruction are English, Spanish, French and German. It is a member of Nord Anglia Education Schools, a family of 85 international boarding and private schools in 33 different countries around the globe, educating a total of 75,000 pupils throughout all its schools.
