A vacancy has arisen for an enthusiastic Teacher of Drama in the Creative Arts Faculty within Stranraer Academy.

The school offers Drama within the broad general education and presents pupils with the SQA at N3/4/5 and Higher in the senior phase.

Applicants for teaching posts should be registered with the General Teaching Council for Scotland, Clerwood House, 96 Clermiston Road, Edinburgh EH12 6UT.

This post is considered as Regulated Work with Vulnerable Children and/or Protected Adults, under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. From 28 February 2011, preferred candidates will be required to join the PVG Scheme or undergo a PVG scheme update check prior to formal offer of employment being made by Dumfries and Galloway Council.

Applicants who have been resident outside the UK within the last 5 years, if offered a position, in addition to a Disclosure Scotland Check, will be required to provide a completed police record check from the police authority in the country or countries in which they were resident.

Stranraer Academy serves the population within the Rhins of Galloway, the far west of Dumfries and Galloway. Approximately 17,000 people live in the area of whom 10,000 live in the town of Stranraer. The ferry companies serving routes to Northern Ireland are the major employers in the area, which is also known for agriculture and tourism.

House prices are generally lower than the Central Belt and there is usually a reasonable supply of rented accommodation available in the area.
Stranraer Academy dates from 1845. In 1965, two schools were opened on the present site - Stranraer Academy and Stranraer High School. In 1970 the two schools were merged and in 1997 the first phase of a major rebuild was completed. Work on the final phase under PPP was completed in 2010.
The Academy is a truly comprehensive school, serving the needs of all young people in the area, with provision included for the full spectrum of special needs.
Facilities in the school include; an assembly hall, dining hall, around 40 classrooms, 10 science labs, 3 wood/metalwork rooms, 2 graphics rooms, 7 computing/ICT rooms, 4 art rooms, 3 music rooms, 3 HE rooms, a drama suite, library, learning centre, games hall, 2 gyms, a dance studio, fitness room, swimming pool and 2 conference rooms. Each faculty has its own Base Area and there is also a large Staffroom. Externally, there are grass playing pitches, a double MUGA, as well as a new 3G pitch.

The current roll at Stranraer Academy is around 1000. There are approximately 80 teaching staff and around 40 support staff.

The management structure is: 1 HT, 3 DHT, 8 PT(Curriculum), 8 PT(Pupil Support), 5 PT(Curriculum for Excellence).
