Job overview

Teacher of Economics, North East Lincolnshire

The college that offers MORE

Franklin College is a thriving, successful sixth form college serving North East Lincolnshire and the surrounding area, with around 1,500 full-time 16-18 and 1,000 part time adult students. We are an inclusive college with an excellent local reputation, and a strong focus on building effective partnerships that support student progress and success. The College has a strong focus on teaching, learning and assessment, and this was recognised in our recent Ofsted judgement of Good with Outstanding features.

We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic and dynamic teacher to the above full-time post for September 2014 (except where otherwise stated). We expect all teachers at Franklin College to become actively involved in our extensive enrichment programme, and contribute to the broader life of the College.

You will be joining a well-resourced and supportive department that offers a wealth of business related subjects and the Career Academy programme. The Business Curriculum Area is a growing and successful area with an increasingly popular and varied curriculum including: AS and A Level Accounting, Business Studies and Economics; BTEC Level 2 and Level 3 Business, BTEC Level 3 Travel and Tourism and IFS Finance qualifications. Courses within the Business curriculum are popular with a broad range of students, and are frequently combined as part of a student's Study Programme.

We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic and inspirational Teacher of Economics. You will be responsible for AS and A2 Economics, and will have a track record of successful teaching at advanced and/or intermediate level. Above all, you will be committed to the success of your students, to their future progress, and to supporting your colleagues. Although successful experience of teaching Economics at A level is desirable, we place a high value on candidates who can demonstrate evidence of, and capacity for, good and outstanding teaching and learning. You will have the ability to enable students to reach their full potential and to provide learning and assessment for all across a range of abilities.

It would be advantageous if you were able to contribute to more than one subject offered within the area, or across the College. Examples of other subject areas include (but are not limited to): Business, Accounting and Finance, Mathematics, Sociology, Politics, History.

The College welcomes applications from both experienced and newly qualified teachers, and job shares will be considered. The closing date for all posts is 12 noon on Wednesday 14th May 2014. The posts are on the Sixth Form Colleges Main Teaching Scale (£21,469 - £36,642 per annum including Professional Standards Payment where applicable). Teaching staff in schools on UPS will be eligible for transfer onto the Professional Standards Payment.

Interviews will be held during the week beginning 19th May 2014.

In 2020, Franklin will celebrate its thirtieth birthday by continuing to celebrate the fantastic achievements made by our students and the contribution they make to the area and to the country.

Franklin is, first and foremost, a college for our community. In 2018 OFSTED recognised the college as ‘embedded within its local community and creating an environment in which young people thrive’.

Our students go on to do great things, and we are delighted that Franklin students are more likely to gain good university degrees and more likely to be successful in securing employment than other sixth form college students nationally.

As a genuine Sixth Form College, (rather than a school-based sixth form or large Further Education College add-on) we are specialists, focussed entirely on sixth form provision. Our skills and effort goes in to supporting young people to make the transition from school to adulthood and to secure their future success. This means we provide a broad curriculum tailored to the needs of young people, taught by staff who are specialists in their subject area and supported by a whole college which is focussed on the phase of a young person’s life that spans leaving school to entering the world of higher education or work.

Our college campus on Chelmsford Avenue is spacious and well equipped to provide students with the range of experiences they need to develop their independence and prepare for their future, both educationally and in terms of wider enrichment. We also work closely with our community to provide for basic skills support in numeracy and literacy in community centres locally.

As a community-facing college, we welcome employers and representatives from a range of universities into the college to advise and support students on an almost daily basis. We also have strong relationships with charity and other local and national interest groups, all working together to ensure that the young people of North East Lincolnshire, Greater Lincolnshire and further afield, see a clear line of sight to their goals and aspirations. Our Franklin Professionals Programmes are designed to engage those young people who have the very highest and clearest aspirations; from the Grimsby Town FUTSAL Programme to our Career Academies in Logistics and Law for example.

We are also a founder member of the Venn Group, working in partnership with four other Sixth Form Colleges in our wider region (John Leggott, Wyke, Wilberforce and Scarborough). This group forms an engine for quality improvement and staff development in the area.

Each year, hundreds of students move on from Franklin College to take their next steps into the world. We always look forward to hearing about their progress and are very proud of all of our students’ achievements.
