Job overview

Teacher of English, Southampton

March 2014

Dear Applicant

Thank you for your interest in the post at Regents Park Community College. As a result of promotion within the department,

Regents Park Community College is seeking to employ a well qualified, enthusiastic and dynamic teacher of English. The English curriculum area is highly successful in terms of students' achievement and progress. English results in 2013 place Regents Park Community College in the top 6% nationally for progress measures. The department also values extra curricular activities, from poetry slams, BBC School News Report to creative writing. For budding DJs, we even have a school radio.

At Regents Park Community College all students take English language and literature and GCSE media studies is an increasingly popular option. Because of this, an interest in teaching media would be desirable but not essential.

As a school, we strive to achieve the highest standards through the recruitment of excellent staff and accordingly, there may be additional responsibilities and opportunities for an outstanding candidate. The post would suit either an NQT or a more experienced teacher. The school prides itself on personalised professional development and will offer an appropriate and extensive support or development package.

Regents Park was judged to be in 'special measures' in the last inspection in July 2013. Since the inspection the school has received positive HMI visits [see enclosed], the fantastic 2013 GCSE results of 67% 5 A* - C including English and Maths have been validated placing Regents Park as number two in the league table of similar schools and ranked number one secondary school in Southampton.

The school has benefited from a positive change in school ethos, a new senior management structure and the sustained support of Bitterne Park Teaching School team including their headteacher, Mrs Susan Trigger, becoming executive headteacher.

We are proud of our achievements in English and would welcome the opportunity to show off the department. If you are interested in joining our team, then please visit the school and the English department. Miss Marie Webster, Assistant Headteacher, will be pleased to speak to you if would like to discuss the post. Please phone the school 02380 325444 or email marie.webster@regentspark.southampton.sch.uk .

Yours sincerely
Jonty Archibald
