Job overview

Teacher of English, Westminster

PIMLICO ACADEMY IS DRIVEN BY THE BELIEF THAT EVERY YOUNG PERSON CAN SUCCEED, GIVEN THE CHANCE.

We are seeking to recruit a well-qualified and aspirational teacher to join our highly committed and experienced team of professionals. You will be expected to teach across the full age and ability range.

The Academy implemented a new knowledge-based curriculum in Key Stage 3 in September 2012. The aim of the curriculum is to develop culturally literate young adults who have the knowledge and skills to be successful in any walk of life. In English, the curriculum has two specific purposes. Firstly, it prepares all students to express themselves fluently in writing and speech, and to understand how others express themselves in writing and speech. Secondly, it introduces pupils to their literary heritage. These two purposes are related and overlap. Each year of the English curriculum is divided into the same five categories. Broadly speaking, the first category, which is 'Writing, Grammar and Usage', deals with the first purpose. The next four categories, which are 'Sayings and Phrases', 'Non fiction', 'Fiction and Drama', and 'Poetry', deal with the second purpose. Almost all pupils at the Academy study for the English Baccalaureate. We offer a range of A Level courses in our Post 16 phase, the most popular being English Literature, Maths, History and the Sciences.

The Academy was rated outstanding in its most recent inspection and is now determined to be one of the very best schools in London, state or private. We are developing a highly academic culture where the highest standards are expected of staff and pupils. It is a dynamic and demanding school and one where pupils and staff are exceptionally well supported. It is also a happy, cohesive and very purposeful environment.

We are seeking someone with excellent subject knowledge who can combine academic rigour and achievement with enjoyment of the subject. If you have energy, passion for your subject and are committed to the highest education standards we would like to hear from you. Applications from NQTs are welcome.

About Pimlico Academy

Pimlico Academy is a mixed ability non-fee paying school for 11-19 year olds. The academy opened in September 2008 and is sponsored by Future Academies. The academy became an all-through school, 3 to 19, from September 2013 when the first Reception class started at our on-site primary school, Pimlico Primary.

The academy has improved rapidly since taking over from the predecessor school and was judged good by Ofsted in December 2021. The percentage of students achieving 5 GCSE 9 -4 grades with Maths and English has improved from 36% to 69%. 90% of students achieved A*-C at A Level in 2016.

The distinguishing factor at Pimlico is our determination to provide pupils with the same standard of education that is on offer at the best independent schools and to ensure all pupils leave the academy as culturally literate young adults. The academy’s sponsor has established The Curriculum Centre to develop and implement a knowledge-based curriculum. We have an excellent Raising Aspirations programme, extensive extra-curricular provision, academic intervention tutors and a wide array of support to enable students to reach their potential.

We employ only very well-qualified staff who are committed to knowledge-rich education and embody a determination to ensure every pupil at Pimlico is hardworking, articulate, literate, ambitious, independent, confident, courteous and compassionate.
