Job overview

Teacher of English, Birmingham

Great Barr School is a successful Foundation school based in north Birmingham.

In the last year, our English Department has been rated as one of the best in the city. We have been chosen to take part in ground-breaking research into strategies to improve literacy and these are making a considerable impact. We have taken radical action to promote reading for pleasure and the 'word of the week' initiative to extend our children's vocabulary is supported by staff in all subjects, from Science to PE. Our English Department is making a significant difference to our children's ability to access the KS3 and KS4 curriculum across the school. You will be joining a very creative, motivated and successful team at an exciting time for the school.

The work of the Department was recognised by OFSTED in January 2014:

  • "In English, including English literature, students achieved an above-average proportion of grade C GCSEs. Many did so when they sat English language in their Year 10 thanks to good teaching."
  • "An intense reading programme has recovered the mean reading age for lower attaining Year 7 students to be in line with their chronological age. In addition, all Year 7 and 8 students spend one lunch break per week in a supervised reading session, accessing literature pitched to enthuse and challenge them. This is working well and helping to raise literacy standards, with the full cooperation of students and volunteer staff."

At KS5 we offer A Level English Literature and A Level English Language/Literature. We also offer A Level Media Studies so this may provide future development opportunities for candidates with a particular interest in broadening their skill-base.

We have an NQT induction programme which has been rated as one of the best in the city. This is an excellent place for an outstanding English Teacher to develop their career.

About Us:

Fortis Academy is sponsored by Shaw Education Trust. We are based in north Birmingham and have a large, diverse and vibrant community of students. We have a well-established and very successful Sixth Form.

We pride ourselves on our strong ethos which values inclusion, good citizenship, mutual respect and collaboration.  We aim to provide a wide range of stimulating opportunities to expand our students’ horizons within an environment in which they feel safe and well cared for and in which they can achieve their best, develop self-confidence and flourish as individuals.  We encourage the active participation of parents/carers in their children’s education; only when the school, the child and parents/carers are working together will children excel.

Our large and established Sixth Form, which is rated as ‘Good’ by OFSTED, specialises in providing high quality Level 3 qualifications and Level 3 ‘applied general’ qualifications.  Year on year we are getting more students into the top Russell Group universities and are significantly exceeding the national average in doing so.  The breadth of subjects offered provides both our students and our staff with great development opportunities.

Our students are drawn from a diverse community and, as OFSTED have noted, there is “comfortable cohesion” and our students “work together and play together well.”  Visitors frequently comment on the pleasant, lively and friendly atmosphere in the school and the great sense of energy and purpose among staff and students.

The school has strong, mutually beneficial links with local schools, universities, employers and community organisations.

Working at Fortis:

We are very committed to the continuous professional development of our staff, and have worked hard to embed sophisticated, innovative strategies to improve teaching and pupil outcomes across the school.  Many of our staff have chosen to develop their careers at the school or have returned to more senior roles after a period working in other schools.

We have a highly developed and well established programme for providing NQT’s with the necessary support to achieve a successful and smooth first year in their new careers.  It has been described as ‘an exemplar of good practice’ and is frequently praised by our partner teacher training institutions.  Fortis Academy is an excellent place to build a career.
