Job overview

Fixed-term from the beginning of November 2014

We are seeking applications from suitably qualified and experienced teachers who can bring a real enthusiasm to the school. This will be, initially, a fixed-term appointment until the end of the academic year. We will be advertising for the permanent position in the New Year for a September start. Candidates who are currently under contract but would be available for a January 2015 start for this fixed-term position are welcome to declare their interest.

BSB is an independent, fee-paying international school with 1,350 students from approximately 70 countries. Students follow a British-based curriculum up to age 16. Post-16 they have a choice of three internationally recognised pre-university examination courses: English A Levels, International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma or BTEC. There is an Early Learning & Development Centre (Kindercrib) for children aged 1-3. BSB has outstanding facilities and an excellent record of academic achievement.

EAL at BSB

At BSB, we greatly value linguistic and cultural diversity and believe that every child has a right to the support necessary for him/her to access the mainstream curriculum and to achieve his/her academic and personal potential. We firmly maintain that every teacher is a teacher of EAL and that effective, active support of bilingual students is the responsibility not only of the EAL specialist staff, but also of all mainstream teachers in different areas of the school and in different subject areas.

The department comprises three full-time teachers and a full-time Language Assistant. We are looking for a well-qualified and suitably experienced teacher to join a close-knit team and take responsibility for the Immersion Programme in Secondary School. In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to teach the IGCSE English as a Second Language course.

Some students, on arrival at our school, still need assistance to increase their proficiency in English in order to succeed in their learning in its widest sense. Great emphasis is placed on the development of confidence and competence in listening, speaking, reading, writing and study skills to levels which will enable them to be successful in the mainstream curriculum.

The successful applicant will demonstrate professional and personal qualities which will enable him/her to make a significant contribution to the continued development of the EAL Department's work and to the school in a wider context. He, or she, should be able not only to provide high-quality and stimulating lessons, but also to be an excellent team player and communicator, collaborating effectively with mainstream subject teachers and building trust with students, parents and teachers. He, or she, will work closely with the Head of Department, teaching and supporting Level One students in parallel with the Level Two and Three programmes and facilitating their successful integration into mainstream classes. We expect staff to be computer-literate in order to make the most effective use of the interactive TV screens found in every EAL classroom, and of the other facilities available in this well-resourced school.

As BSB is a busy extra-curricular school, it would be an advantage if the successful candidate could offer a particular activity as a part of this programme.

Profile:

The successful candidate will be a qualified EAL teacher with an honours degree, or equivalent, and will ideally have previous experience of teaching across the Secondary School age range (11 to 18) within an international context and a knowledge of the British system.

He, or she should:

  • set and observe the highest standards in terms of learning and teaching, getting the very best from students from all backgrounds and of all abilities
  • work closely with department colleagues in creating a sense of cohesion and positive ethos within the department and co-operating with colleagues in other departments and the Primary School
  • be attuned to current developments in the teaching of EAL
  • be appreciative of students' differing cultural backgrounds
  • be actively involved in CPD within the department and across the school where appropriate, including after-school meetings, ISE observations, relevant courses and CPD days. Ideally, he/she should be able to offer CPD sessions to colleagues.
  • be willing and able to contribute wholeheartedly to the social development of students and to the extra-curricular life of the school.
  • have good ICT skills and the ability and enthusiasm to apply these in the classroom

Our offer:

  • A full-time, fixed-term position for the remainder of the academic year (31 July,2015)
  • Professional experience in a vibrant British international environment
  • CPD opportunities
  • An attractive salary (main scale) with extra-legal benefits

Deadline for applications:   Wednesday 1 October at 16.00 (Belgian time).

Interviews will be held at the school towards the end of the month and this process will include a sample lesson and opportunities to meet potential colleagues and students. Please apply by using our application form on the website.  CVs and letters sent in separately will not be considered.

We look forward to receiving your application. If you have not heard anything further from us by the end of September, please assume you have been unsuccessful on this occasion.
