Job overview

Ysgol Aberconwy is a mixed 11-to-18 comprehensive school of 800 pupils. Set in its own extensive brand new campus on the banks of the beautiful River Conwy, the school is situated in the medieval town of Conwy on the North Wales coast adjacent to the Snowdonia national park. Ysgol Aberconwy's proximity to the main A55 trunk road provides easy accessibility throughout North Wales and Cheshire and Wirral are within 1 hour's drive.

The school is exceptionally well resourced with all teachers having their own room, Ipad and laptop as well as access to a dedicated ICT suite for their curriculum area.

English at Aberconwy is delivered by a specialist team. The team is close-knit and forward-looking in their approach. Lessons are taught in 7 suited rooms; all fitted with Interactive Whiteboards and Apple T.V.s.

In KS 3 pupils follow a skills based modular curriculum which is reviewed and developed by the team annually. The English department works closely with other departments, particularly Humanities, in the planned development of Literacy skills.

In KS 4 all pupils follow the WJEC English and AQA English Literature specifications. In addition, the English department offers options in Drama (EDEXCEL) and Media Studies (OCR) - all members of the team are encouraged to contribute to the broader English curriculum.

At KS5 English Language and Literature (AQA), Media Studies (OCR) and Drama and Theatre studies (EDEXCEL) are offered.

The English team is committed to learning beyond the classroom. There is a strong tradition of extra-curricular Drama, with two plays being produced annually. Theatre trips are offered throughout the year.

About Ysgol Aberconwy

Situated in a spectacular location on the Conwy estuary, Ysgol Aberconwy boasts a modern, well maintained and well equipped environment. Whilst the school’s ethos is based on traditional values of respect, responsibility and community spirit, students experience the very latest technology and teaching methods in the classroom.

We have the highest expectations of all our pupils in all areas of school life. Academic standards are important to us and we expect all pupils to achieve the very best that they are capable of. However, we also have the highest expectations of our pupils when it comes to behaviour, attendance, punctuality and uniform.

The pastoral system at Ysgol Aberconwy is extensive and innovative. Each year group has a full time non-teaching Guidance Mentor. Working from a key stage base these mentors are available throughout the day to respond to pupils concerns and to provide a direct contact point for parents.

As well as providing a sense of belonging and a medium for competition, the House System provides the structure for monitoring pupil achievement against their individual subject targets. The four Houses, Crafnant, Dulyn, Hiraethlyn and Llugwy are named for the four tributaries of the river Conwy. Pupils attend weekly House assemblies, compete for their House in a range of competitions and have their progress monitored and reported on by their Head of House.

We have a flourishing extra-curricular programme. This includes a full range of sporting activities in the school’s brand new state-of-the-art facilities as well as music concerts and drama productions. The school owns its own field centre in the hills above Aber and has an extensive outdoor activities programme. Visits are arranged at home and abroad including the annual ski trip and an expedition to the island of Jura. For this year a visit to the USA has been added to the list. There are links on this website to many of these events.
