Job overview

Teacher of French, Hampshire

The Burgate School and Sixth Form is seeking to appoint a well-qualified and enthusiastic teacher of French who can deliver outstanding lessons across the curriculum. The ability to teach A-level French is desirable, but not essential, and it would be an advantage if a second foreign language could be offered. This post would be suitable for either an NQT or a more experienced teacher and there would be immediate opportunity for further development for the right candidate.

This is an exciting opportunity for a teacher who is passionate about the teaching of languages to join a successful modern languages department and to help us maintain and enhance our school's reputation as an ambitious and friendly school committed to comprehensive education, which has 'Learning for Life' at its heart.

Subject Details

French is taught to all students in Years 7 and 8. In Year 8, students are able to choose from Spanish and German as their second foreign language and then in May they decide which language(s) they wish to continue with in Year 9 in preparation for their GCSEs. Students are taught three hours of languages a week.

Languages continue to be optional at Key Stage 4, however our students are very much encouraged to continue with a language. At present all students at KS4 work towards the AQA specification and are allocated 5 periods a fortnight. Our GCSE results in languages are excellent and continue to improve. The percentage of students gaining A*- C in French in 2013 was 81% with 76% in German and 100% in Spanish.

There is a good uptake of Languages at KS5 and we currently follow the AQA specification in French and the Edexcel specifications in German and Spanish. All students have nine periods over two weeks. Each course has achieved good results with a high percentage of A/B grades since the school gained Sixth Form Status.

The Modern Foreign Languages Department at present comprises a team of seven teachers who regularly share good ideas and practices in a mutually supportive environment. The MFL department has four specialist rooms, all of which have interactive whiteboards. The department has access to four excellent suites of networked computers, which can be booked for class teaching.

Person Specification

We are looking for a well-qualified graduate who fulfils the following criteria:

  • Has a passion for languages and thorough knowledge of French
  • Is committed, driven and enthusiastic
  • Has an innovative approach to teaching and learning
  • Can demonstrate and model excellence in the classroom
  • Will consistently and effectively track student progress and develop strategies for fulfilling student potential
  • Shows fairness and consistency in disciplinary matters
  • Has high standards of personal organisation
  • Has a good record of punctuality and attendance
  • Possesses good inter-personal and communication skills
  • Shows keen interest and ability to keep abreast of new initiatives, government, school or personally driven
  • Demonstrates deep commitment to the ethos of the school and the motto 'Learning for Life'
  • Will model and present a positive image of the school
  • Has a strong willingness to contribute to the whole life of the school through extra-curricular activities.

Closing Date Wednesday 7 May 2014
