Headteachers of Independent schools have the freedom to create an environment for learning which is unique in terms of the school’s ethos and philosophy.

There are thousands of Independent schools in the United Kingdom. You, as a parent, know your child’s academic, artistic and athletic strengths and will aim for a school that can both motivate and stretch your child.

Ilford Grammar School can support these goals through high expectations, high teacher to student ratios, specialist subject teachers and a highly sought - after, safe learning environment. All of this taking place during  a school day designed for effective learning with evening ‘prep’ completed at home.

Our philosophy is that every child, no matter their ability, can and should be both academically and socially stretched.

The school was established in 1990, six years after the formation of its excellent nursery department, which was certainly a provision the community and the local borough needed. After six years, the Nursery had established itself as a market leader and remains so to this day.

Progress can be measured in several ways. For the pupils, the syllabus is geared towards Key Stage and national examinations. For teachers it’s the results their pupils attain, whether that’s progress made in the classroom or under exam conditions.

Ilford School’s progress culminated in Ofsted’s granting them Grammar School status in September 2008, and in doing so making the school the only co-educational Grammar School in the borough and surrounding areas.

The school comprises of Early Years Foundation Stage through to Key Stage 4 teaching pupils aged 3 to 16 years. The Headteacher describes the school’s specialist teachers as “second to none” and gives the impression the 38 staff, from cleaners to directors are a tight-knit group.

With a licence for 283 pupils, it’s easy to see why they’re so together. All pupils go through an assessment process before they’re admitted. It’s a process seen to be beneficial to the school and the pupils alike. It helps to identify any possible learning differences a child may have, and if detected early enough these differences can certainly be improved.

Out of the classroom; Ilford Grammar School has a variety of activities to enhance your child’s social, academic and sporting ability. Whether it’s Video Club, Public Speaking, Speech and Drama, Karate, Football, French, Spanish, Chess, Music or Dancing, there’s something to keep everyone on their toes.
