Job overview

Teacher of History (and Politics) in Netherlands

There are few things which are likely to have more impact on a young person's future than the quality of the school they attend. So we work hard to ensure that everyone who sends their child to the BSN is happy with that choice.

It is our belief that every child deserves the very best start in life and we make it our purpose to provide just that to all the children who enter our doors. We endeavour to provide the best possible teaching and curriculum; we want every child to make progress and achieve the very best they can; but most of all we want the children at the BSN to be happy and enjoy their life with us.

Established back in 1931 The British School in The Netherlands has a tradition of quality. The school was founded on the principles of developing and challenging the whole individual - 'head, hand & heart' - producing students with high aspirations and confident independence.

We pride ourselves on the fostering of strong values: mutual understanding, respect for others and high personal endeavour form part of our students' everyday lives. Being part of the BSN is about more than school work though. We try to offer our students a treasure chest of worthwhile and exciting experiences which they can carry with them for the rest of their lives.

History is an extremely popular subject at the BSN which is testament to the quality teaching and learning that occurs within the department and we are looking for a full time teacher to join that team. Currently there are 8 GCSE groups and 7 Sixth Form groups (Plus two for Government and Politics)

Our students relish finding out about the past, and due to our approach they also understand its implications on the future. As a team we have nurtured an understanding and love of history because the subject matter and resources are both relevant and appropriate to the pupils being taught and we utilise a wide variety of sources and methods. The department encourages students to think for themselves and to reach substantiated and balanced judgments.

As our student body is multinational the History department delivers a thoroughly international curriculum and covers topics such as the Dutch Revolt, Nazi Germany, The Arab-Israeli Conflict, Stalinism, and the American Civil War. We have also crafted a KS3 curriculum to meet the needs of our students which delivers the skills outlined in the National Curriculum but which also has international coverage. Differentiation is also important as classes are of mixed ability and contains ESL students.

If you are the kind of teacher who loves to debate their subject, is willing to broaden their knowledge, plans active student focused lessons which leave them thinking and considering the implications of the past on the present then this is the department for you!
