Job overview

BSB is an independent, fee-paying international school with 1,350 students from approximately 70 countries. Students follow a British-based curriculum up to age 16. Post-16 they have a choice of three internationally recognised pre-university examination courses: English A Levels, International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma or BTEC. There is an Early Learning & Development Centre (Kindercrib) for children aged 1-3. BSB has outstanding facilities and an excellent record of academic achievement.

Mathematics is a very successful and popular subject at BSB and is taught in both the A-Level and IB programmes. Many students in the A-Level programme opt to take Maths with a choice of either the Mechanics or Statistics option. Mathematics is compulsory for IB students who choose between the Maths Studies at Standard Level, Maths Standard Level, or Maths Higher Level courses.  Further Maths is also an option at the school in both the IB and A-Level programmes.

In Years 7 - 9, the curriculum is based on the English National Curriculum.  Students in Years 10 and 11 follow a course leading to the IGCSE examination.  Students are taught in 6 or 7 sets according to ability, the majority entering at the Higher tier with a Foundation option available if appropriate. Students in the top set in Years 10-11 also have the opportunity to sit Further Maths IGCSE. Results in public examinations have been very good with many students going into Higher Education in fields that require a good level of mathematics.

The department is well-resourced and the use of technology is seen as a vital element of the wide range of learning opportunities available as part of a rich mathematical curriculum. The school also participates in many different mathematics competitions.  Students take part in UKMT, European and Team Maths Competitions with great success. More generally, staff are expected to be involved in the wider, extra-curricular life of the school which is rich and varied.
