Job overview

Teacher of Mathematics, Devon

Are you an outstanding teacher and communicator, a colleague with vision and imagination? We offer the chance to join a strong and committed team of staff and leaders who care about our youngsters as well as working in a fantastic new building and campus. We have secured a steady improvement in results and are proud of what we have achieved and what we offer.... and we have no intention of standing still!

Although this post is for a classroom teacher of Maths there is the possibility of a TLR position should the right candidate present themselves.

The Mathematics Department consists of 10 teachers. There is an exciting mixture of youth and experience within the department. Everyone is expected to contribute in debates and take part in exchanging ideas and good practice both formally and informally.

There is a need in the College, as a whole, to ensure that assessment data is put to good use to ensure that most students make good progress because of the teaching they receive. The department operates a rigorous assessment policy where students are regularly tested in a formal context. This builds into the College data review 6 times per year and allow students to move up or down between groups as appropriate.

We are supported by 1 part time technician and 1.2 fte Numeracy Teaching Assistants who work hard as part of the team to ensure that appropriate support is given to both students and staff. In addition there is a plethora of ICT resources which are available to ensure quality teaching and learning and all classrooms are equipped with interactive white boards.

In KS3, the Scheme of work follows the new Maths framework with rich tasks and functional tasks to enrich the KS3 curriculum. KS4 students study the linked pair GCSE Mathematics course which will enable learners to gain 2 Maths qualifications in the subject - Methods in Mathematics and Applications of Mathematics. KS5 students follow the Edexcel syllabus at AS and A2 level. Students are grouped by ability across the College.

We regularly showcase our talent and enter the UK Mathematics Challenge and other competitions. Students achieve highly and some have qualified for the European round of the Maths Challenge in each of the last 2 years.

The successful candidate will be required to:

To be an effective professional, who demonstrates thorough and up to date curriculum knowledge, can teach and assess effectively, take responsibility for their professional development and enable students to achieve well.

In fulfilling the requirements of the post, the teacher will demonstrate essential professional characteristics, and in particular will:

  • Inspire trust and confidence in students and colleagues
  • Build team commitment with colleagues and in the classroom
  • Engage and motivate students
  • Demonstrate analytical thinking
  • Improve the quality of students' learning

We hope that you will find enough information here to help you decide if this is the right opportunity for you.

If you require further information please do not hesitate to contact either myself or our HR team.
