About Nazarbayev Intellectual Schools

The Schools

The Nazarbayev Intellectual Schools (NIS) are part of a wider programme of educational reform, which includes the establishment of the Nazarbayev University, the Centre for Educational Excellence and further initiatives across Kazakhstan to focus on teacher training and development.

We invite you to participate in an exciting and unique project in the development of a number of intellectual schools named after the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan. It is the president's initiative to develop a fundamentally new way of educating the future intellectual elite of the nation. One of the distinctive features of the schools is the trilingual policy – with the main subjects being taught in Kazakh, Russian and English.

The Students

The students who attend the intellectual schools are chosen on the results of their examinations. They are required to show significant aptitudes in science, mathematics and languages. All the students are gifted and talented and well-motivated to succeed; the schools aim is to develop them as independent learners and capable critical thinkers.

The Curriculum

The curriculum is currently based on the Kazakh national curriculum, which underwent a constructive development with support from the University of Cambridge International Examinations. There is an increasing emphasis on a student-centered, skills-based approach, while retaining the best of the current curriculum. The new curriculum was developed with the guidance of international experts and has been operating in functioning Intellectual Schools since September 2012. The trilingual policy has been implemented in all areas of the curriculum.
