Job Description: Professionally Qualified Teacher
Responsible to: Principal
Job Purpose: To teach Maths to students of various abilities throughout the academy.

The professional competences for teaching staff are laid down in the Teacher Training Agency's National Standards. The responsibilities listed below are intended to act as a summary of the duties and should be read in conjunction with the Teacher Training Agency documentation.

The academy seeks to appoint a committed and enthusiastic teacher who can teach Maths. The candidate appointed will be expected to demonstrate knowledge and enthusiasm for the subject and a desire to communicate this to students.

Person Specification

  • A knowledge of and enthusiasm for all aspects of the subject, to teach their subject through to A Level
  • A focused, committed and innovative teacher
  • A willingness to work as part of a team, and the individuality to question and expand the philosophy and practice of that team
  • The ability to employ a variety of teaching styles
  • The ability to assess and record student achievement regularly and in accordance with policy
  • The ability to create and sustain good working relationships with students and staff
  • High expectations as to what students can achieve
  • A sound understanding of approaches to assessment and differentiation
  • Flexible, with vision and an abundance of energy
  • A willingness to contribute to the extra-curricular provision
  • To demonstrate a willingness to experiment with and develop new activities to stimulate and motivate student learning
  • Establish and maintain discipline while insisting on the highest standards of work in order to ensure students are stretched and able to achieve their potential.

CURRICULUM

  • Preparing, teaching and evaluating lessons throughout an agreed age and ability range in accordance with statutory requirements, academy aims and objectives, academy policies and Curriculum Area schemes of work.
  • Using a range of teaching and learning strategies and resources so that individual students have access to the curriculum.
  • Contributing to the teaching of cross-curricular themes, skills and dimensions.

STUDENTS

  • Being familiar with and supporting all academy policies, especially those on behaviour, discipline, student welfare and Health and Safety.
  • Liaising with the Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator over students with Special Educational Needs and modifying teaching accordingly.
  • Ensuring that targets outlined in a student's individual educational plan are pursued.
  • Liaising with and clarifying the role of any Teaching Assistant attached to the class.
  • Ensuring that homework is set in line with academy policy and regularly marked and that record of marks are maintained.
  • Ensuring that the reward and behaviour systems are used.
  • Setting and maintaining high standards of student work in the classroom.

ASSESSMENT

  • Assessing students' work in accordance with statutory requirements and academy policy. Maintaining a record of students' attainments. Using Assessments to diagnose students' individual strengths and weaknesses and planning subsequent teaching accordingly.
  • Writing reports on students and attending Parents' Evenings.
  • Assisting the Head of Department in setting and marking internal examinations.

ACADEMY DUTIES

  • Undertaking duties at break, and after the academy day on a rota basis.

GENERAL

  • Undertaking reasonable care of the academy's resources and accounting for any resources used.
  • Attending meetings as directed and assisting in planning and evaluation.
  • Setting cover work when absent if it is at all possible.
  • Liaising with a reviewer and more senior staff over career and professional development.
  • Reporting anything which could endanger or threaten the health and safety of students or staff to the Head of Department.
