Preston Lodge High School is a non-denominational secondary school serving the communities of Cockenzie, Port Seton, Longniddry, Prestonpans and the surrounding area. Our roll is currently 1015. In June 2010 we were inspected by HMIE. They identified the particular strengths of the school as:
- The high morale and improving ethos of the school community
- The contributions of young people to improvements in the climate for learning
- The work of staff across the school in supporting young people's learning
- The strong leadership of the Headteacher on school improvement.
The report was very positive and has given us a strong base for our development in future years. Our motivated staff, students, parents and the community we serve are working hard to further improve all aspects of what is already a very good school. We are currently involved in an exciting partnership with Cramlington Learning Village in Northumberland which is engaging all our staff in a fundamental examination of lesson planning and practice.
One of our key aims is to maximise achievement and attainment for all our students. Examination results are improving and last summer our S5 secured the best Higher results the school has achieved in many years.
We are working hard to further improve all aspects of what is already a very good school. A key priority for us in this work is securing and retaining the highest quality of new staff.
Further details about the school can be found on our website at www.prestonlodge.net. You will also find a full copy of the HMIE inspection report at this address under publications.

Located in East Lothian, Scotland, Knox Academy is a co-educational secondary school. Named after a 16th century theologian, Knox Academy can trace its roots back to the 14th century, but is more directly descended from a 19th century grammar school. The school has seen extensive redevelopment over the years, and has around 800 pupils in total, making it average-sized compared to other secondary schools of its type. The school can boast of a wide range of modern teaching and recreational facilities, including a gymnasium and large laying fields.

Values and Vision
Knox Academy runs an asymmetrical school week, making it unusual compared to many other British schools. Monday to Thursday, pupils attend six periods a day finishing at 4pm, whilst on Fridays they only attend three periods, leaving school at midday. The school works hard to provide a diverse curriculum suitable for all pupils, taking great pride in its comprehensive ethos. Outside the classroom, the school runs its own “Children’s University” for younger students, with them taking part in trips and learning opportunities in conjunction with a local university.
Education Scotland Inspection
“The headteacher is successfully engaging with a range of partners in the local community, including businesses. These partnerships successfully enhance the curriculum and increase young people’s successes and achievements. As a result of the school’s increasing community links, young people are engaged in volunteering and develop their leadership skills through working with local organisations.”
