TEACHING AND LEARNING

Learning is at the heart of all we do at The Lancaster School. We encourage pupils to explore their ideas, ask and answer questions, listen to their teachers and peers, develop their written work and reflect on their learning.
Subjects taught in the first three years are largely traditional with an emphasis on ‘learning to learn’. We aim to develop pupils’ knowledge and understanding and provide the boys with the skills to learn. This emphasis on developing skills continues in years 10 and 11, when boys choose from a unique and wide range of courses. At this crucial stage the boys receive excellent advice and support to ensure they choose the appropriate courses to meet their needs, abilities and interests. This is so important if they are to be successful and fully prepared to meet the challenges which lie ahead when they leave at 16.

To support pupils’ learning we provide parents with termly grade reports. These show the achievement and progress the boys are making in each subject area in relation to the challenging targets which have been set for them.
Learning is far more than sitting in a classroom! We aim to provide every opportunity to enrich pupils’ lives so they enjoy their education and build confidence as individuals.

These opportunities include theatre, dance, drama, and art workshops at the school. We also create the chance form pupils to take part in a wide range of trips. Many of these involve visits to local places of interest (e.g. Bradgate Park, National Space Centre) others include visits to the theatre, museums, art galleries and sporting events. There is also an active Duke of Edinburgh programme at the school.

A range of residential trips, such as outdoor education, sporting tournaments, and field studies take place in this country while others take place abroad. These include language trips, visits to the Belgian Battlefields, skiing in France and studying ICT in New York.
