Sir John Lawes is a high performing, consistently over-subscribed, community comprehensive of 1169 11-18 year old students situated in the Harpenden, just north of London, a relatively prosperous dormitory town for London commuters, which falls within the 'fringe'. We have grown dramatically in the past few years and are still growing, particularly in the 6th form, largely because of the very significant popularity and success of the school.

Sir John Lawes has recently been awarded a specialism in Science and is a Specialist School in Community and Media Arts. We have also received an Achievement Award every year for the last few years. We are the only local school to have been awarded a second specialism, and with our Training School status this will make us one of the few schools in the country with three recognitions of this kind. Our most recent full Ofsted Inspection (February 08) graded us “Outstanding” across all areas. In 2006 we were inspected in the area of Education for Sustainable Development and our practice was rated outstanding.

We have established a reputation for innovation, very high standards of teaching and learning, excellent relationships in a warm atmosphere and high levels of student and staff motivation.

At Sir John Lawes we have recognised that it is essential to support staff by providing appropriate training. We have regular INSET sessions for staff and the DfES recently identified us as a centre of excellence for developing teachers.

We would be pleased to see you, if you would like to come in for a look around our school and to meet our Headteacher, Phil Newbury. Please telephone the school on 01582 760043 ext 222, to make an appointment.
