Archbishop Ilsley is a large oversubscribed Catholic Secondary School in Acocks Green on the border of Hall Green and Yardley in Birmingham, that caters for pupils between the ages of 11 and 18. There are 210 pupils in each year and the sixth form is predicted to grow considerably over the next five years.

OFSTED rated the school ‘good’ when they last visited in June 2018.

It is an exciting time to join Archbishop Ilsley as we appointed our new Head Teacher on 1st January 2023.

You may be wondering where the school gets its name from.  Edward Ilsley was the first Archbishop of Birmingham.  He built the village of Acocks Green’s first church and was passionate about educating the children of the area.  He died in 1926. The school, bearing his name, was opened in 1957.

Visions and value

In terms of ethos, as a Catholic School, the teaching of Jesus Christ underpins all that we do. In the words of St Matthew, we want all pupils to “let their light shine”. As well as teaching them an engaging and well-sequenced curriculum, we also pride ourselves on developing the whole person. We run an extensive Duke of Edinburgh Programme, which is one of the most popular in Birmingham. Relationships, charity and looking after each other are also promoted at every opportunity. The second branch of our ethos is Jesus’ most important commandment: “love one another as I have loved you.” .

We are fortunate to enjoy very strong links with our neighbouring Church, Sacred Heart and Holy Souls. Canon Jonathan and Father Alex are regular visitors to our school. If you haven’t already, I would encourage you to visit their beautiful Church. You can find mass times and newsletters on their website: https://www.holysoulschurch.co.uk

Our School is a proud member of the St Teresa of Calcutta Multi Academy Company (MAC). We enjoy excellent relationships with all the schools in the MAC. You can find more about the MAC by clicking here: https://saintteresaofcalcutta.org.uk
