Job overview

Teacher of Science (Chemistry or Physics Specialists), Birmingham

Great Barr School is a Foundation School and is one of the UK's largest Specialist Science & Maths Schools.

Science is a strong, stable, firmly established department which is achieving good results and has an excellent reputation:

  • In summer 2013, A*-C pass rates in the separate Science GCSE courses were Biology (97%), Chemistry (97%) and Physics (100%). 83% of last year's Year 11 made 3 levels of progress.
  • "Students make good progress in all their science courses to attain above-average GCSE grades, including a high proportion of the highest A and A* grades. This is because of consistently good teaching in all years and sufficient specialist science teaching time to deliver practical science lessons that capture students' interests." (OFSTED, Jan 2014)

The Science Department delivers a diverse range of examination courses:

  • GCSEs in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Astronomy, Geology and double award Science.
  • A Levels in Biology, Chemistry, Physics.

Whilst we currently run the BTEC First Certificate in Applied Science, this will no longer be offered for next academic year.

Led by a Head of Department and 2nd in Department, Biology, Chemistry and Physics are each co-ordinated by a Subject Leader. The Department also has a KS3 Co-ordinator, an ICT Co-ordinator, a Literacy Co-ordinator and an Assessment Co-ordinator.

As a school, we are very active in the promotion of STEM and our ultimate goal is to educate future scientists, technologists and engineers for the city of Birmingham. We have strong links with Birmingham's ThinkTank and the National Space Centre in Leicester.

At the top of our agenda is challenging, well structured, engaging and innovative teaching and learning in which pupils make measurable progress in every lesson and are aware of what they need to do to take the next step in their learning. Our team of Leading Practitioners support staff in their continuous professional development and disseminate good practice. Three of our Leading Practitioners are Science specialists.

Great Barr School is a vibrant 11-18 school with vision, integrity, ambition and distinction which is highly regarded in the local area. See our website\it speaks for itself! We are an employer of choice in the local area. With high levels of morale and low levels of staff turnover, visitors and new staff frequently comment on the tremendous atmosphere, team ethos and support we have fostered in our school. We firmly believe that we achieve our best when we work together.

What we are looking for:

  • An enthusiastic and driven Chemistry or Physics specialist with excellent subject knowledge and the passion and ability to excite pupils about Science in general and Chemistry/Physics in particular.
  • A hard worker - this is no place for coasters!
  • A teacher who is keen to develop their skills and become an 'expert teacher'.

About Us:

Fortis Academy is sponsored by Shaw Education Trust. We are based in north Birmingham and have a large, diverse and vibrant community of students. We have a well-established and very successful Sixth Form.

We pride ourselves on our strong ethos which values inclusion, good citizenship, mutual respect and collaboration.  We aim to provide a wide range of stimulating opportunities to expand our students’ horizons within an environment in which they feel safe and well cared for and in which they can achieve their best, develop self-confidence and flourish as individuals.  We encourage the active participation of parents/carers in their children’s education; only when the school, the child and parents/carers are working together will children excel.

Our large and established Sixth Form, which is rated as ‘Good’ by OFSTED, specialises in providing high quality Level 3 qualifications and Level 3 ‘applied general’ qualifications.  Year on year we are getting more students into the top Russell Group universities and are significantly exceeding the national average in doing so.  The breadth of subjects offered provides both our students and our staff with great development opportunities.

Our students are drawn from a diverse community and, as OFSTED have noted, there is “comfortable cohesion” and our students “work together and play together well.”  Visitors frequently comment on the pleasant, lively and friendly atmosphere in the school and the great sense of energy and purpose among staff and students.

The school has strong, mutually beneficial links with local schools, universities, employers and community organisations.

Working at Fortis:

We are very committed to the continuous professional development of our staff, and have worked hard to embed sophisticated, innovative strategies to improve teaching and pupil outcomes across the school.  Many of our staff have chosen to develop their careers at the school or have returned to more senior roles after a period working in other schools.

We have a highly developed and well established programme for providing NQT’s with the necessary support to achieve a successful and smooth first year in their new careers.  It has been described as ‘an exemplar of good practice’ and is frequently praised by our partner teacher training institutions.  Fortis Academy is an excellent place to build a career.
