Job overview

Following the arrival of a new Headteacher in September 2014, the leadership team in the school has been re-structured with the aim of becoming the school of choice in East Northants (our school was deemed 'Good' during the last Ofsted visit, Spring 2013).  We are seeking a talented dynamic practitioner of science, with a proven track record, to join us on our journey.

You will take responsibility for leading the large dedicated faculty team, by actively managing all aspects of the faculty's on-going development.  This post offers you a superb opportunity to play a lead role in developing the future of science here at Wollaston -particularly embracing the new curriculum challenges that lie ahead.

Results have been good across the school over several years at both GCSE and A-level, with approximately one hundred of our students progressing on to study at higher education level each year.  Science is a popular subject here, with about 80-90 students each year electing to study triple science at GCSE.  Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Environmental Science are all offered at A-level, and this summer 10% of our Year 13 cohort progressed on to study science-related courses at University.

Wollaston School is a large, rural community school located in a village setting a few miles east of Northampton, with around 1400 total students on roll - of whom 230 students are in the sixth form.  We are extremely excited about our brand new, state of the art, £1 million science block which will open here next month: comprising 11 laboratories, a designated IT suite, 3 technician preparation laboratories, faculty staff room and dedicated office space:

The successful candidate will:

  • Be a highly qualified inspirational teacher and scientist, who consistently demonstrates outstanding classroom practice;
  • Have the ability to develop and enhance the climate for learning within the science faculty - promoting consistent achievement of the highest expectations from colleagues, and creating a collaborative ethos within the science team;
  • Demonstrable experience of leading and managing a team of 14 committed faculty colleagues: able to model excellent professional principles, striving for excellent classroom management and appropriate professional development for all the team.
  • Take a lead role in shaping the future of science here at Wollaston: leading the faculty's on-going improvement plan, and managing the deployment of human, physical and financial resources within the faculty.

Closing date:  Monday, 29 September 2014
Interviews will be held during w/e 10 October 2014
