Abersychan Comprehensive School is a mixed, non-selective, non-denominational secondary school without sixth form situated in Abersychan, a suburb of Pontypool in South Wales. It is a state school. A smaller than average-sized school for a school of its type, the latest Estyn report identifies a school roll of 866 pupils at nursery, primary and secondary school level between the ages of 11-16.

Increasing pressure was put on the school to take students following the closure of local school Trevethin Community School in 2007, but it has been praised for its ability to accommodate, as shown by its Welsh Secondary School award which it received in 2008 for it outstanding contribution for the transition of pupils.

Values and Vision

Abersychan is a school with the motto “learning to live”. It is a place with the aim of encouraging all students to give their personal best to develop into happy and successful young people who are able to excel in their talents and ambitions. The school believes in working closely with parents and the local community.

Estyn

“In a minority of lessons, teachers plan suitable activities that engage pupils’ interests. At key stage 3, the proportion of pupils who achieve the core subject indicator has increased rapidly and is now generally in line with the proportion in similar schools. The performance of the pupils eligible for free school meals in the level 2 threshold including English and mathematics has generally been in line with averages for similar schools over the last three years.”
