The School

Suzhou Foreign Language School is a dynamic and forward looking private school for 3500 students aged 3-18. SFLS has a very strong international ethos and a high profile in China. The great majority of students are Chinese nationals. Over the past decade SFLS has developed a large international curriculum department in which students study for international qualifications, particularly on IGCSE and international A levels, before going on the study at universities abroad. The Post

This is a new post which offers exciting possibilities to someone with drive and experience, The Vice-Principal International Education will oversee the further develop the school's expanding international curriculum department. Reporting to the Principal Mr Cao Lunhua the Vice-Principal will also contribute to the strategic management of the school, and will work with an experienced team of staff in the International Office. The post is on an initial contract of 2 years, which is renewable by mutual agreement.

Specific responsibilities will be to:

  • Oversee the work and professional development of the team of 46 international teachers working at SFLS
  • Develop further the existing provision for IGCSE and international A levels
  • Develop and promote strategies to support students in their applications to international universities
  • Contribute to the strategic leadership within the school and in particular in the field of the school's international ethos

Salary and benefits

SFLS seeks to attract a person of the highest calibre and therefore offers a very competitive package. Annually salary will be 600,000 Chinese RMB before tax but free of insurance. The school will fully fund 2 China-UK return flights per year, and if appropriate will contribute towards the cost of flights for children. Free accommodation is available to a single person or couple on the school campus; alternatively the school will make a substantial contribution towards the cost of local home rental.

Person specification

SFLS is looking for an experienced professional with the energy and drive to establish this new role as a key element in the school's strategic development. SFLS expects the successful applicant to have:

  • Curriculum management experience at a senior level in a UK or international school where GCSE and A level courses are successfully run
  • The proven ability to oversee the work and professional development of a team of teachers
  • Evidence of the drive and determination needed for successful curriculum innovation
  • The ability to adapt to an international educational environment - however, experience of working in an international school is not essential

The ability to speak Mandarin is not a requirement. Ideally the Vice-Principal will be able to contribute to a small amount of teaching, but this will be subject specific and is not a requirement.

Suzhou Foreign Language School is a mixed, non-denominational all-through school with nursery and sixth form situated in the city of Suzhou in the southeastern Jiangsu Province of East China. It is an independent school with the options of studying in many different international languages. It has the option of being a day pupil or a boarder, with 85% boarding. A larger than average size for a school of its type, the school currently has a roll of over 3,000 students from nursery all the way up to senior high school, supported by over 400 teachers and staff. It also has a number of different international students from mostly other Asian countries, as well as the UK, USA and Canada. The school supports a K-12 education, awarding qualifications including IGCSE and A-level CIE.

The origins of the school go back to its predecessor Suzhou International Elementary School, a public school founded in 1994. In 2001 it was privatised, when it gained its new name Suzhou Foreign Language School. It has received a great deal of acclaim over its time as a school, having been named the leading primary and secondary school of the province several times.
