Professional duties

The following duties are deemed to be included in the professional duties which a teacher is required to perform:

Teaching           

• following the curriculum for the school

• planning and preparing schemes of work and lessons

• following the school policies

• maintaining a working atmosphere conducive to learning by setting high expectations for pupils’ behaviour and maintaining good discipline in accordance with the behaviour policy

• using teaching methods, resources and approaches which sustain progress and interest, matching these to the pupils being taught, so that pace, challenge and motivation are maintained

• teaching, according to their educational needs and adapting tasks to individual needs • ensuring effective teaching of whole classes, groups or individuals within a whole class setting, so that learning objectives are met

• setting high expectations for all pupils notwithstanding individual differences including gender or cultural backgrounds

• creating a classroom environment which celebrates supports and extends opportunities for learning including high quality classroom displays

• assessing, recording and reporting on the development, progress and attainment of pupils

• develop an effective partnership with parents and help them understand how they can support their child’s learning and personal development

• Use external and internal data to inform teaching and learning

Other activities

• follow the school’s Child Protection Policy and Procedures to ensure the safeguarding of pupils

• promoting the general progress and well-being of individual pupils and of any class or group of pupils assigned

• support pupils who may be allocated to you as form tutor, fulfilling duties as directed

• providing guidance and advice to pupils on educational and social matters and on their further education

• making records of and reports on the personal and social needs of pupils

• administering standardised assessments according to subject requirements

• communicating and consulting with the parents of pupils

• communicating and co-operating with persons or bodies outside the school

• participating in meetings arranged for any of the purposes described above

• support to colleagues and pupils by attending school functions which occur from time to time in the evenings and at weekends, e.g. Carol Service, school plays, Open Days etc

• contributing to the school termly magazine with appropriate news

• taking part in the rota for breaks, lunchtime, and after school clubs and duties across the school day

• actively promoting the fundamental British values, including democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect, and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs

• valuing diversity and showing understanding of the protected characteristics as set out in the Equality Act, 2010

• respect and maintain confidentiality in relation to children, families and staff

• be a committed and active member of the staff team and school community

• be an ambassador for the school, including in the wider community

Assessments and reports

• providing or contributing to oral and written assessments, reports and references relating to individual pupils and groups of pupils and attendance at parent-teacher meetings twice each year

• writing or contributing to termly reports for parents

Performance Management  

• participating in performance management arrangements

Review, induction, further training and development  

• reviewing from time to time methods of teaching and programmes of work

• participating in arrangements for further training and professional development as such including undertaking training and professional development which aim to meet needs identified in statements of objectives or in performance management

• in the case of serving an induction period, participating in arrangements for supervision and training

 Educational methods 

• co-operating with the Head and other teachers on the preparation and development of courses of study, teaching materials, teaching programmes, methods of teaching and assessment and pastoral arrangements

Discipline, health and safety

• maintaining good order and discipline among the pupils and safeguarding their health and safety both when they are authorised on or off premises, including completing the appropriate risk assessments when required.

Staff meetings   

• participating in meetings at the school which relate to the curriculum for the school or the administration or organisation of the school, including pastoral arrangements

Cover    

• supervising and so far as practicable teaching any pupils where the person timetabled to take the class is not available to do so

External examinations   

• participating in arrangements for preparing pupils for external examinations, assessing pupils for the purposes of such examinations and recording and reporting such assessments; and participating in arrangements for pupil’s presentation for, and conducting, such examinations

Administration 

• participating in administrative and organisational tasks,

• attending assemblies, registering the attendance of pupils and supervising pupils, whether these duties are to be performed before, during or after school sessions

Safeguarding & Child Protection

• The post holder’s responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young persons for whom they are responsible or with whom they come into contact will be to adhere to and ensure compliance with the school’s safeguarding policy statement at all times. If in the course of carrying out the duties of the post the post holder becomes aware of any actual or potential risks to the safety or welfare of children in the school, they must report any concerns to the Designated Safeguarding Lead. 

 

2. SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

• Develop and extend the teaching of Art and Design Technology, working with the Director of Studies to implement curricula for Years 3-11

• Share good practice of teaching Art and Design Technology with the SLT and other teachers.

• Ensure that IT is used appropriately within Art and Design Technology

• Support colleagues as necessary in the teaching of Art and Design Technology

• Prepare pupils for exams and assessments in Art and Design Technology, following the school’s chosen syllabus and support them as needed in their journey to achieving GCSE qualifications

• Plan and deliver Art and Design Technology clubs

• Follow the Art and Design Technology curricula and programmes of study

• Have due regard to health and safety in the Art Room, creating risk assessments as required

• Create displays of pupils’ work to showcase their achievements.

About Polwhele House School

Polwhele House is a co-educational, independent, day school in Truro, Cornwall, for children aged 2 to 14. Founded in 1976 as Boscawen Rose School for pupils aged 3 to 8, the school moved to its present site in 1981, when it extended the age range to 13.  Since then the school has grown further and moving towards GCSE in 2027 welcomes it's first Year 9 class in September 2024.

Polwhele House is based in a historic manor house, within 32 acres of gardens, playing fields, park, and woodland.

Throughout the school, pupils are articulate and composed, displaying very high speaking and listening skills. An established feature of the lessons is that pupils regularly enjoy the challenge of thinking deeply and reasoning with each other, the teacher and with set tasks. From this, they are able to put together a strong case to support their own thoughts as well as to respectfully question others, including the teacher if required.”
