Job overview

Emanuel School is seeking an experienced and dynamic SENCO/Head of Learning Support to join our team and lead our Learning Support Department.

The SENCO/Head of Learning Support will oversee and manage all aspects of support for pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), ensuring that every student has the opportunity to achieve their full potential.

Key responsibilities will include conducting initial assessments of pupils' needs, managing ongoing assessment processes, overseeing exam access arrangements, providing whole-school training on SEND, and supporting pupils' transition processes into HE/FE. Additionally, the successful candidate will lead a departmental team and oversee recruitment, development, and performance management, to ensure the efficient delivery of support services.

The ideal candidate will hold Qualified Teacher Status, along with relevant certifications such as the OCR L7 Diploma in Teaching and Assessing Learners with Dyslexia/SLD. They should demonstrate proven success in teaching at secondary level, with a track record in school improvement and preparing SEND pupils for public examinations. Excellent communication skills, strong leadership abilities, and a detailed knowledge of SEND legislation and safeguarding procedures are essential.

Working at Emanuel

Colleagues enjoy working at Emanuel and, like the pupils, are ambitious for the school, delivering a challenging curriculum and an exciting co-curricular programme.

There’s a strong sense of community and friendship amongst our staff. An open dialogue about the school’s aims and direction of travel is maintained with a weekly pre-school briefing, half-termly staff meetings, termly consultative group meetings and a dynamic common room committee.

Emanuel works hard to look after its employees, who all benefit from good pension provision and free lunches. Our appraisal scheme focuses on professional development and we sponsor postgraduate courses and a range of training opportunities. Staff wellbeing is extremely important to us: a healthcare plan via Simply Health that includes counselling and medical support is offered to all staff; staff yoga, football and mindfulness meditation are amongst the weekly activities colleagues can participate in.

About Emanuel School

“The school whole-heartedly fulfils its aims to inspire endeavour, confidence and ambition in its pupils.”

ISI Inspection Report April 2023

Welcome to Emanuel. We are a fully co-ed school of over 1000 pupils, aged 10-18, with over 200 teaching and support staff colleagues.

We are an ambitious community. This summer, 87% of grades at GCSE were awarded 9-7, which is a lift of 37% across recent years. Our A Level A*-A percentage is 53%. This is 20% higher than in 2018 and the school is now recognised as one of the best for academic outcomes in the country. The recent ISI Inspection report noted that: “Pupils make excellent progress across the range of subjects and significant value is added to their academic outcomes.”

We are committed to developing all our major sports and value pupil participation as well as team and individual achievement. The school’s critical build plan will see a significant investment in our on and off-site sports facilities across the next 3-4 years. The same site plan will support the outstanding creative and performing arts teaching at the school, as the school’s plans for a large specialist science teaching block will also allow us to improve our facilities for music and drama, both areas of traditional strength. We were delighted that these areas were recognised in last year’s Independent School of the Year Awards when we won the award for our performing arts.

Beyond the classroom, we have a thriving partnerships programme, helping to develop our pupils at all ages as they participate in this work, and benefiting the local community, with over 1000 primary school children coming to use our site and work with our pupils each month. In 2021 we won the Independent School of the Year Award for our community outreach work.

At the heart of our school is a positive and welcoming culture. We are fortunate to have a committed and talented group of colleagues, people who recognise the importance of everyone at the school having a varied working life, a sense of personal growth and shared enjoyment. We wish you the best of luck with your application.
