The Role

Teaching will take place in 1:1 and small groups with students from across the college. The post holder will have proven expertise in assessing, teaching and supporting students with SpLD difficulties on courses at Level 1,2 and 3 and will also be able to develop confident study skills. The post involves assessing and working with students to improve their English skills, both written and spoken, advising subject tutors on in-class support strategies including access arrangements and working collaboratively with Tutors and Learning Support Assistants across the curriculum. The Post holder will work collaboratively with the college’s EHCP co-ordinators to ensure students with SpLD who have EHCPs are supported in line with the statutory duties of the SEN Code of Practice 2015.

 

The Successful Candidate

The successful candidate’s knowledge, skills, experience, abilities and qualities will include:

  • Proven ability to assess and teach students with SpLD traits in 1:1 and small groups.
  • Able to advise Vocational teaching staff on how SpLD traits impact on learning and on the most appropriate teaching, learning and assessment strategies.
  • Able to advise Vocational teaching staff on appropriate access arrangements for students sitting public exams.
  • Knowledge and experience of EHCPs and the Statutory duties of post-16 settings under the SEN Code of Practice.
  • Able to foster independent learning skills to enable students to access the wider college environment and provision.
  • To assess students’ eligibility for access arrangements (if suitably qualified).

Northampton College is a mixed, non-selective, non-denominational further education college situated in Northamptonshire. It is a 16-plus institution with three campuses: a major building at its main Northampton site, a smaller campus near the town centre and another 20 miles away in Daventry. It provides places for around 9,000 students aged 16 and over, most of whom are full-time and aged 16-18.

Northampton College was opened in 1973. It merged with Daventry Tertiary College to expand its Daventry campus in August 2004, and its Booth Lane campus reopened after a large redevelopment in 2012.
