We are conducting a study based at the Cambridge Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Research Group (www.CIDDRG.org.uk), in partnership with the Down's Syndrome Association (DSA) and the Wolfson Brain Imaging Centre (WIBC) Cambridge to investigate the risk of dementia in people with Down&'s syndrome (DS). This four year study is funded by the Medical Research Council (MRC). Integrating pupils with Down's syndrome into mainstream classes. At Plashet School in east London, every effort is made to include Amina, a 14-year-old pupil with Down's syndrome, into appropriate mainstream classes. Find out how Amina is able to be included in a variety of typical school classes, with the school also responding to her individual needs with targeted one-to-one sessions. This programme features a practical science lesson, focussed maths and reading support, plus a 'lifeskills' lesson that prepares the Year 10 pupils for work experience attachments.

Using coloured blocks as models for chromosomes, Yan Wong shows how the 46 chromosomes in a dividing cell are assorted during meiosis into daughter cells, each with 23 chromosomes. Yan demonstrates crossing over between the chromosomes and illustrates how each of the daughters are genetically different. Yan also shows what goes wrong in conditions like Down’s syndrome: the chromosomes don’t separate properly during meiosis and one sex cell has one too many chromosomes.
